Such a disappointment that you are wandering around in such a gritty but beautiful environment, and instead of trying to unite survivors to create a new and better society, you are instead just dodging attacks constantly. When will game designers learn that people don't like getting shot at (or at least I don't.) Naughty Dog has already taken that approach with their Uncharted games. Lush great environments, but for some reason, everyone you meet wants to kill you even though you have done nothing to provoke them. How asinine.

How does this make them any less annoying or forced? There seems to be a trend in western gaming recently where they stick you with a girl to make you care about them and protect them like in Walking Dead or Bioshock but you really just don't care and it comes off as forced. |
You may not care, but the vast majority of people who played them loved their characters. I remember Clementine winning quite a few Best Character awards from various sites and such for last year, and I'm sure Elizabeth with her terrific story arc, detailed animation and useful AI, and a fantastic performance by Courtnee Draper will scoop up a few awards of her own.
Seriously, I don't see how they're annoying at all. Clementine was really smart and wise for her age, if anyone was annoying in the game it was jerks or cowards like Larry or Ben. Elizabeth was THE story of Bioshock Infinite, unless you bought the game without having any idea whatsoever it would be about then you shouldn't have been surprised by her presence. Ellie is funny, holds her own, and can be helpful in combat. None of these character strike me as "annoying" unless you just can't stand characters that are useful in terms of the plot and/or conflict.
And forced? It's a part of the game, technically EVERYTHING in a game is forced on you.

Finished at 17 hours.
As far as story goes, I like how it ends, even though some of the actual developments are too convenient to make the point the story is trying to make.
As far as game goes, it was great, but my friends talked about how I was too cheap with regards to my resources...
This is true: they give you hella stuff to work with, even on hard difficulty.
I might as well have shot stuff up given the amount of stuff I ended the game with.
(it actually would have been easier to just kill everyone in certain areas given the amount of stuff I had... I didn't even really ever get a chance to use the flamethrower because I was hoarding too hard)
Also, AI is hella dumb...
Enemy AI has a lot of neat context sensitive stuff (if you hold a guy hostage and everyone backs off, they'll go in if they hear you clicking your gun when they realize you're out of ammo), but there are a lot of times where it didn't really feel like they were working as a team.
I'd complain about how it seems like no one has peripheral vision, but it may be something necessary in order to make the stealth work.
(there are several moments where I've crouch walked in front of dudes and they don't see me at all... leads to unintentional hilarity... reminds me of Deus Ex)
Partner AI has physically blocked my way on several occasions and they never actually cover my blind spots like they say they will.
Also, I still find it funny that these games haven't found this middle ground in terms of AI buddy management: they practically give everyone but you god mode so that you don't have to actually worry about them... there's no real tension when it comes to your AI buddies.
(at least on hard difficulty)
RE4 still did this the best and that thing came out like several years ago.
X-ray vision makes the game super free, so I turned it off when I learned that I could turn it off.
Enemy compositions are really great, but it takes like 2-3 hours or something before you're actually playing the game.
(or at least it felt like this... I held forward most of the early parts of the game)
Overall, I'm pretty pleased with it.
Game was a lot of fun.

Ah, but Ashley is much better done I would say. She can actually be injured and hurt and truly does matter to gameplay. Games where you're suppose to be a bodyguard and your client is invulnerable and can't be hurt seems a bit too easy, eh? And hey, you could actually look up her skirt if you wanted.

The girl you're escorting can't be hurt? That seems completely counter-intuitive to the whole purpose of the game

I'm sure its a good game if you like shooter types, but why is an American made game that has nothing to do with anime being covered on an Anime site?

But it's not an escort-mission (THANK GOD), and Ellie can be killed from what I've seen but she can generally fend for herself and fight off enemy attacks. Elizabeth from Bioshock Infinite provides help but doesn't directly attack enemies plus most of the enemies only are motivated to wipe out Booker so it generally makes sense that she's never in danger.

I assume they are trying to expand on some of the gaming coverage, since they also did a review of Remember Me. The gaming community and anime community have large overlapping portions.

Actually, she can get killed in battle. I've not played it but I watched my brother beat it and have seen newgame+.
Over time, she actually starts fighting and attacking the enemies. Once she does that, they will attack her. There is a warning symbol that appears over her head and you have to kill the enemy before they can kill her or you'll have to restart the scene.
...There are other people you deal with in the game that the same thing occurs.
And unlike most AI I"ve seen in games when they are attacking enemies during an action game like this. When your partner is shooting (Ellie does get a gun later), your partner can kill the enemy for you.
...Most games I've seen, the enemies just stun from your companion's AI attacks.
...There is character development during the story leading up to her fighting (and heck yes, she does fight and yeah, she can die in battle).
...After all: Winter happens and you control Ellie that entire season since Joel is half-dead and you even fight the crazy cannibal boss with just her and a switchblade knife.

This is actually another reason why resources are kinda free: you can just have the AI (when applicable) take care of killing things since they have infinite ammo anyway.
(though this does involve relying on the sometimes terrible AI)
And the AI getting attacked isn't a real issue since they usually get to blow the enemies back... and even when they don't trigger combo breaker, it takes forever for them to actually be killed.

Awesome, I was hoping Dave would write a review of it. I keep seeing the preview for it on youtube over and over and I'm pretty on the edge about buying it. I hope you and Joel also talk about it on your podcast. I think you could have a really interesting conversation about it.

Awesome review, just makes me wanna play the game even more. I've been seeing clips and people playing it, but I tend to stay away from shooters or games that rely on distance targeting because I'm not very good at them (Bioshock was an exception - though I relied on the wrench far more than I should have!)

In your defense, the wrench was pretty OP in Bioshock. I think most people wrench-focused towards the end of the game.

Thanks! The plan is to do a dinnercast with Graz and maybe Ajay. Keep an eye out.
