After completing the manga to this, I can say that the fact that a second season is horribly unlikely is just awful. As for what we got here, I was thoroughly annoyed by the pace at which the series crawled at points, the over abundance of pointless scenery shots and the rotoscope was fairly hit or miss quality wise with all the random missing or undetailed faces and the occasional frame skips. It still didn't derail my enjoyment of this series though

Great review. It does suck that it won't get a another season, but what could you do. It did have some lazy moments like when you backgrounds with people in it not animated at all in them. And as mentioned some scenes did drag a little too long. Other that I loved the show.

I'm a huge fan of the manga. The anime didn't disappoint me, but I wish it was two cour because the ride had barely started.

Just nabbed this BD set during Right Stuf's holiday sale, and I'm looking forward to revisiting it.
On a side note, I'm quite happy that Sentai uses the "obtrusive yellow subs". They almost never disappear into the screen like the more popular white subtitles do. |

I'll give you music and animation, but art? No, I'm not talking about the design, though I do think it's horrible. I mean that fact that you can't even SEE the facial features unless they're right up close to the face. That's unrealistic since I can see if someone is smiling, for example, if they are 5-6 meters away in real life. Also the story is actually very weak and simple. It's pretty much an anime for hipsters who think they are misunderstood by the ignorant masses. What they many don't see is that this anime is a jab against said hipsters. The story is actually so simple, that it could easily be solved if the MC had a gram of brain power. Nobody would believe Nakamura if she told them he stole the uniform. NOBODY. All he had to do was deny it and hide/get rid of the thing. He's a moron.
Problem with this show is that you can't actually identify with anyone unless you're had serious amounts of angst yourself. Bottom line: no, most of your anime fans are not going to like it. |

The rotoscoping art in this one didn't do it for me. At all. I dropped it after only the first episode because, while knowing it was supposed to be taken seriously, I just kept laughing at the art.
I honestly never want to see more of it. I can't possibly take it seriously. |

I consider Flowers of Evil the best anime series from 2013. Pretty much everything works (distinctive visuals, music and pacing) to make this anime a tense but worth watching experience.
I noticed that the review interchanges the title of the anime referring to it as The Flowers of Evil and Flowers of Evil. I realize this can be a petty complain, but consistency would be ideal. |

The manga is pretty accessible to nearly anyone for the same reasons that the anime is well-done, but the anime itself is pretty polarizing. You either love it for what it does or hate it for what it does. There's very little middle ground, since its animation and pacing will either make the show for you or kill all the steam. That said, I definitely wouldn't have wanted it any other way. It looks ugly, sounds ugly, and plays out ugly, and the "disappearing faces" thing contributes to its uncanny valley-ness that really spikes up the cringe-worthy atmosphere (which is what turns a lot of people off from it, but also works so well for the creepiness).

Just out of curiosity, how poorly did this show sell? Seems like a second season is next to an impossibility.
Did the studio responsible for the retroscoping even apologize for how the show looks? That says something right there about how open anime fans are to new styles of art. I'll be honest, the slight uncanny valley the show's art projects, actually works in its favor if you ask me. |

Not sure, I was pretty much ground with it. I liked it, but didn't love it. I felt it did lots of things really well, such as the static scenes, the pace was brill, etc., and the alienating art style was an excellent stroke. But it just didn't all connect together for me. I loved it polarised many people, some of the arguments over it have been epic, I'm just a little disappointed it didn't polarise me. |

That’s my main concern with the show. I watched it twice, loved it the first time, was disappointed the second time. Unfortunately, once you decipher the themes and representations in the show, there isn’t much else to rewatch it for, since it isn’t particularly fun to watch and it becomes less interesting the second time. By the way, I don’t think this show is really about outsiders, intimacy, invasion or emotional trials of youth. Those are all just depictions of the main theme mentioned in the title. |

Even better is this one:
Actually, I do want to see it again. I think I'll be able to appreciate it more now that I won't be constantly cringing in dread that the show was going to go some place darker than I was prepared to see. |

Watched the pilot, found it boring and generally unappealing, wondered what was supposed to make me want to watch the next episode.
Not a show for everybody, I suppose. Still, I wonder at the kind of person that watches the pilot and finds themselves so floored as to actually want to continue on. I would sooner look elsewhere for something dark and cerebral, not necessarily in anime format. |
