Also a fan of the novels, and not a fan of the changes in the anime thus far. Starting in media res is fine. The nano-as-mascot-character is lame, though less annoying than I expected. The test will be how the show handles the Wonder Trio, since spoiler[they get their rep from Adele showing them how to interact with the nanos directly]. The pedophiles are not only unnecessary but distract from the legitimate results of the graduation fight. (Maybe the director is a big Nadia/Pokemon fan, with a thing for pathetic recurring villains?)
On the plus side, Reina and Mile ring true, while Mavis is just as much a caricature in the original. Here's hoping they can handle Pauline without turning her into a parody. I sincerely wish this adaptation had been done by the team behind Endro~!, instead. That show always reminded me of a FUNA story anyway (though without the isekai angle). Has FUNA said anything publicly about the adaptation? |

I just watched 1-4 of Average Isekai, firmly against my own judgement, but there were too many people recommending it to me for me to ignore. And I have to say, they were right and I was wrong! I definitely have been enjoying it.
I'm happy to hear that the lolicon villain is an anime original, as she was easily the least enjoyable part of the show so far. And is it just a bluff, or was the end of episode 4 previewing that the show is taking a turn for a bit of actual conflict and darkness, at least much more than I'd expect from a CGDCT show? Honestly, probably not, I don't doubt that it will prove a minor counterpoint in an overall lighthearted comedy, but then I'm not really sure. The show has been just competent enough so far to give me a little hope that it might pull off such a thing much better than most isekai who try it ever manage. A surprising standout for the season so far from me, and probably the isekai series that I'll actually watch this season as I feel ready to drop the others. |

Pretty much, yeah. Honestly, even that doesn't necessarily make it terrible, but the actual result of the modifications--a painfully shallow parody with way too many tasteless sex jokes--makes it pretty hard to tolerate. The novels are (among other things) a parody of isekai and anime culture, but not on the bottom-of-the-barrel level of "hey look it's a tsundere" and "wahh my boobs are too small." In a roundabout way, though, this anime successfully convinced me to buy more of the novels... to take my mind off of how poorly they were adapted.
Not that I know of, but that sort of thing is unusual. Japanese politeness and all that. Only case I can think of is "Kumamiko - Girl meets Bear" (I think?) which had such a disastrous anime-original ending that the author put up a tweet vaguely implying that they didn't like it. The manga of Average, from the bits I skimmed through, seemed to have some of the same issues as the anime, and I don't think Funa had anything to say about that, either. |

The owrst part of this show is its direction.
It showed earlier in the earlier lady pedo, breast envy and fanservicey gags, but usually the overall tone and pacing is lacking and it made itself clear with Reina's background. Her past was tragic and heavy, but the direction ruined any gravitas it could have delivered by rushing Reina's scenes and flashbacks (both in terms of pacing and quality) and constantly cutting to "Mile being silly", which get more of a focus. Basically there was too much Noise for Reina to deliver any message. Pop culture references also seem a bit excessive (specially that long tirade of WonFes references) but those seem to be on the original LN? Anyway, if anything this show makes me want to check out the LN to see how much it improves by removing the anime senior staff. At least I'm gladd the show is generally so easygoing, since it's filling the "Kirara-style SoL" niche way better than Houkago Saikoro Club does. |

Mile's backstory from Episode 5 is basically an adaptation of the light novels' original introductory arc. From a narrative standpoint, it's not as though cutting 100+ pages out of the first light novel and moving them to the part of the story where the girls all tell each other their backstories is that terrible of an idea. I'm not even particularly opposed to flashback episodes. What really bothers me is that it feels like the showrunners thought that their anime-original stuff from Episode 1 was a better way of presenting this franchise to newcomers.

At least Nano-kun is now justified in context. (For those who haven't read the novels, the swirly sparkle effect is much more how the nanites are represented there.)
<pedant>Not statistical outliers so much as the difference between taking "average" to indicate median rather than mean.</pedant> The two introductory arcs in the novels were remarkably repetitive. I thought this episode did a nice job of covering the information by making a joke out of the repetition (i.e., Nano-kun just counting out the incidents). |

Ep 6,
I think the series is having a bit of trouble switching back and forth between the silly, happy moments, and the civilian massacre moments. The episode starts off lighthearted and silly, then switches over to being dark after the grandpa supposedly got killed and Reina has another drama moment. Then goes right back to being happy in the end when the grandpa is alive. The fact that all the other widows and orphans of the rest of the people in his caravan who were just killed are completely ignored makes the whole happy moment at the end kind of dark (although since the main characters didn't meet them they don't really matter I guess). It just feels odd when the tone shifts from one extreme to another and then back again in a single episode. I enjoyed the series more when it was just pure comedy such as in the first 4 episodes. |

Personally I find this episode struck a good emotional balance and the transitions weee handled well enough, unlike the previous episode where the whiplas was string or the one befire where the comedy bits sabotaged Reina.
Bringing back the one character the group was invested in was kind of necessary, but at least NPC's got to cry for their dead in tjñhe background, which is something more serious series often fail to do. |

I also thought the show badly bungled tone in episode 6. The tension that the events should theoretically have are undercut by the awkward attempts at comedy, and the comedy itself isn't even funny on its own merits. I don't think that the idea of including realistic tragedy in a show like this is a bad one, necessarily, but I do think the execution here was about as half-hearted as it gets.

I honestly don't remember this from the novel, other than that there were soldiers masquerading as bandits at one point. I've only seen the first two episodes, so how far exactly does the anime veer from the novels from there? |

@Blanchimont
They kept the basic concept of soldiers from a neighboring country pretending to be bandits to cut off trade to a border city. The episode is otherwise unrecognizable compared to the same events in the light novel. They did keep the bit of Mile magically filling the charging soldiers shoes with sharp pebbles but forgot to mention that Pauline's "hot water" was hot because it was essentially Tabasco hot sauce. |

If anything, I praise this episode for taking full advantage of the previous arc's jokes as part of its own setup (Pauline and Mavis' were specially simple to require no effort to remember) so they serve triple duty as throw off gags to alleviate tension, tying the group together in their misfortune and setting up the next arc.
But also I'm not a fan of series opting for fully disjointed arcs (which is something manga is very fond of for obvious reasons), so I love that this one can't work without the previous. And gotta love that Heartcatch Precure reference. With how blatant references usually are in this show, it's kinda surprising how low-key that one was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfYwHuejWBU |

This series had a rough start but the past few episodes have been really solid. I'm thankful that the series didn't spend to long with Pauline trapped with her mom and brother held hostage. Really not a good look for the count to not take any action against the viscount and murderer company head until his daughter was apart of it.

So this anime finally resorted to pantyshots...

You're acting surprised they'd do this when the very first episode was an anime original episode that introduced anime original pedo villains, the animes fixation on Myle's chest, and of course all the other changes that were sexual in nature such as the swimsuit scenes which were barely a thing in the LN and all the sex jokes. |
