If it weren't for this column I think I would have written off Sugar Sugar Rune as cookie-cutter shoujo because of the title. The reviews caused me to pick it up.
Solanin sounds great. I've been reading all the manga I can find about college/post college characters (Genshiken, Venus in Love, Happy Mania, Suppli, Honey and Clover etc.). I'll definitely be checking this out. |

Thank you so much for reviewing Solanin. <3
I hope more people decide to check it out. Honestly, it's the best manga I've read this year. |

I read -very- little manga, but Solanin definitely interests me. I love honey and clover so much clearly because it almost stings how close I am to some of the characters.
ANN has Solanin listed as two books in Japan, which I consider is complete (since it's been over 2 years)? And is the 1 english book the entire story or just the first half? |

Yes, the series is complete in Japan and the Viz edition is an omnibus containing both Japanese volumes. |

What should I say then? A few months ago I was told that no one would know who Inio Asano is or care about his manga (shrug). I'm really surprised to see so much feedback in this thread. Now it's showoff time. |

There, there, Carlo. Don't cry, as I do care that it is ended because it means I'll now pick it up. You piqued my interest in the series whenever you first reviewed it for RTO. I didn't go out and buy it then as it was been released rather slowly and I didn't want to catch up. I prefer to have the manga finished releasing or close to it before I start picking it up. It's why I haven't started picking up Berserk yet. My exceptions have been Ah! My Goddess and Black Jack. But Fujishima will probably drop dead before he finishes AMG, so I figured I would just start picking it up, and Black Jack is episodic. And it looks like Solanin will be a buy, especially since it will only be a single volume. |

Gotta agree with you on Batman, though my disappointment with the end result forces me to downgrade it to a C+. And this is from a guy who could deal with that last volume of Togari! If Bruce Wayne didn't look like one of those Kinnikuman(Ultimate Muscle) characters, and if the actual premise was given more contemplation, I'd probably rank it higher. But it ends up being generic, rather than intriguing. I'm just hoping DC will re-release the Asamiya and Otomo stuff if I buy this one, I guess... BTW, Encyclopedia guy. When are you going to add this effing manga to the database already?!

Have to disagree on Claymore, too. Not sure what to expect on volume 14, but I actually thought 13 was an improvement over 12, since it didn't just fast-forward the story and screw me out of some Braveheart/300-style fighting in favor of "run away and fight another day" and "Let's just magically become stronger without actually being in tough situations". Plus, with all the new characters being added, the series might need a few back-stories for me to tell them apart.

Ah, so that's the one you kept for yourself! Wonder if that might be the next Asano manga Viz goes after (if Solanin does sell well enough, that is). Definitely would prefer Nijigahara Holograph over it, but I'll take what I can get. |

It's depressing, really. After watching a few episodes, I can't even bring myself to watch the entire series. It just lost all the charm that was in the manga. The manga is just . . . perfect. The art threw me off at first and I had the first volume for like, six months before I even read it. Upon reading it, it was like . . . all hope had returned to the world of the Magical Girl genre. I'm really depressed I left 1-7 at home, when I got 8 I could barely remember what happened. That and Hot Gimmick are what I'll be rereading over Thanksgiving break and bringing with me to force anyone who even mildly considers themselves an anime fan to read. The opening is totally worthy of watching over and over though. |

Agreed. Weird-ass footnote: I was at Book-Off the other day and apparently there is also a SSR game for Nintendo DS. Unfortunately this appears to be the same cheap cash-in as the anime with generic collect-as-much-hearts-as-possible gameplay. Corporate hacks just don't get the point of the series ... However, it soothes my heart to see so many fans and fans-to-be come out of the woodwork. Thank you RTO readers ... YOU HAVE GIVEN ME HOPE! |

Finally finished Solanin. It's a perfect example of where Nana should have gone before it bought its own hype. Still, some of the material comes off cheap and wedged in for more drama, rather than "realistic". Plus, I don't like the way certain threads remain unresolved, and the way that certain characters aren't given more panel time. But overall, it's a great read.

But Nana is pretty much a soap opera from the onset -- it only ratchets up that element and drives it to nigh-unbearable degrees later. Solanin has a few melodramatic moments, but it's really a separate entity entirely.
Aside from the first scene about the spoiler[music contracts,] I can't think of what you're referring to.
That's life.

Hellkorn:
That's exactly my point. Before that "later" arc, there was a sense of it being more than a soap opera; it was about real people.
I dunno, the spoiler[sudden death of the male lead], the spoiler[surrogate guitarist maybe-boyfriend] who just happens to show up afterward...Stuff like that. |
