Haven’t read the source material but 1 cour doesn’t feel like long enough for the sheer amount of stuff the series is juggling right now.

Probably because like the last two seasons, Funimation will be streaming the dub with Crunchyroll streaming the sub. And they might not want to promise a locked-in April premiere date with current uncertain circumstances.
The original plan before COVID was that the entire series was going to be same-day simul-dubbed, so its not like they would have been really missing out on anything by making that sort of deal with CR at the start.

I'm afraid that season 3 may end up only one cour(ugh) because Fruits Basket remake will have a total of 63 episodes if I heard correctly. Seasons 1 and 2 have 25 episodes, season 3 could have 13 episodes. 50+13 is 63. I'm worried about the pacing in season 3 due to possibly 1 cour. God forbid. |
I can only hope they changed their minds. They've taken some stuff out, not a lot, but the last episode was two big reveals on Kureno and Akito. They have yet to do Tohru's parents pasts and all and then we have the grand bitch of 'em all, Ren. So they may have to do two cours, I hope.

There's also Machi's backstory, Motoko's graduation, the Kyo/Kyoko story, Akito torturing Rin, Kakeru's history with Tohru, Kyo and Tohru, and the entire climax and resolution.
I mean, maybe they could do like an extended one-cour where they get 16 episodes, but I feel like it needs to be a 2-cour.
