I caught a screening last night (it premiered in Brazil last Thursday) and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Unlike the CG remake, the movie's many changes to the story actually work and make some sort of sense, the action scenes are very well coreographed and shot, and the acting is pretty decent across the board. Still, I think the armors should have looked much sleeker and cooler, and those huge helmets really don't work.

Although I'm very skeptical about the movie's box office prospects (especially in the US), I'd definitely watch a sequel, so I'll be rooting for it to make its money back.

Zhou: Won't pretend. Mario's going to dominate for a bit. But hopefully, the fans like yourself are coming out to see it in the key countries. Anyway, it doesn't need to open big in the U.S., as long as it can do some mini-Valerian numbers.

If the film is good, I'm kind of predicting a similar trajectory to Bullet Train, where a meh theatrical run was bolstered by a very strong presence in streaming thanks to good word of mouth.
