Great review. Dead on as regards the show's appeal. I consider the cruelty a big bonus, but I love dark comedy.

And this is why I love Dai Mahou Touge. The unrestrained cruelty in this series is what makes it so vastly different than other comedies out there, who get laughs from panty shots and romantic misunderstandings.
And as I've said in the Dokoro-chan responses, this series is so much better in content and overall wit.

Absolutely. I'd just like to add I found just about everything involving Punie's cute mascot Paya to be absolutely hilarious. As gleefully sadistic as Punie may be, he practically steals the show on numerous occasions.

The general consensus is that is a wonder that both Dokuro and Punie were licensed at all.

And I am happy with that.

Ditto. In fact, I wouldn't mind if they brought G-On Riders over here in this manner. Wink

No, they're jusy trying to make the release successful, rather then dumping money into a dub they won't break even on.

Subonly is nothing new, and in VHS days, many titles were released subonly. The prominence of dubs only came about during the boom of the earlier part of the decade, when sales were high for most anime, and made dubbing the majority of titles, even dubbing old catalogue titles, doable and often profitable.

Nowadays, that's just the way things are, and companies have to weight their options- do a subonly release that pleases many fans who want to watch/own the title and make the release viable, or only release titles they can dub but still make a profit on. Putting resources into something they'd likely lose money on is not an option........ dubbing something like Punie-Chan 6 years ago would of been sensible, but not in today's market. If you want to change things, well, keep buying anime and make your friends do it too Smile

And dang, I loved the war flashbacks, paya.

This is def. going on my Christmas wish-list.

That said, for some reason, the misuse of "nonplussed" in the description bothers me more than usual.

I had no idea this was licensed, much less released! This is a truly great comedy, that I assumed could never be licensed. Just wish there were more of it. As mentioned, the 4 omakes are great as well.

I'm glad it wasn't dubbed. I hated dubbed DVDs.

For those who who haven't seen this, but have seen Dokoro-chan: I'm posting to refute the earlier comments that this is better. Punie-chan has its moments, but Dokoro-chan is much more amusing.

Yeah, this series is so totally mean. I wasn't missing this one. I was actually surprised they brought this over. I also love a good deal of the old school references.

Love this show. I put mine on the shelf next to 'Dokuro-chan'. Considering the candy cane cover, makes it worth breaking out during the holidays. Razz

Thanks for the review, this looks like something I'd enjoy and was completelly unaware of. I likely would've overlooked this as a traditional Magical Girl anime if I saw it in a store as opposed to the Dokuro-chan style anime. Now if only TRSI would have their Media Blasters sale already! Rolling Eyes I'm pretty much caught up with all the anime I need to buy aside from the Media Blasters stuff. (Such a great company!)

I just recently saw PUNIE-CHAN, and while I thought it was really funny I also thought DOKURO-CHAN was funnier. I liked DOKURO's sense of chaos and insanity with cruelty and violence cheerfully treated as something fun and exciting. With PUNIE-CHAN there was a certain logic behind everything in the show so the violence and cruelty made more sense.

Same here. I really enjoyed both series of Dokuro-chan, and Punie-chan sounds like it is in the same vein, so I'll probably like it as well. Time to find it. ...

err not quite. Dokuro-chan is mischievous, playful and ecchi. Punie-chan is evil, malicious and cruel. For example in both shows the stars discover a secret crush. Dokuro-chan tries to help it along but causes chaos (and bloodshed!). Punie-chan deliberately uses this knowledge to torment the potential lovers for her own amusement. Not quite the same thing.

No, they're jusy trying to make the release successful, rather then dumping money into a dub they won't break even on.

Then it's not too unreasonable to think "If a series won't sell enough to support the cost of an English dub, it's probably not that good anyway."

I saw this DVD at Best Buy. The cover caught my interest and the description on the back sounded interesting. But as soon as I saw it was Japanese dub only, I put it back on the shelf.

Not having an English dub is just a deal-breaker for me. I've skipped High School Girls, Emma, Simoun, and even Gurren-Lagaan due to their lack of an English dub. There are too many other interesting anime series available that do have an English dub.

Over 700 official R1 release DVDs in my collection and growing. Cool

It's hard. I hadn't seen Bleach so a friend who claimed that it was "his most favorite anime ever" offered to bring some DVDs to our weekly game/dvd party. I then found out he only had bootlegs. Sad

Everytime I look at the Bleach box sets at a shop I wonder: if someone who claims that this is "his most favorite anime ever" doesn't buy the official release, then why should I? Crying or Very sad
