The "cutesy child-like girl who refers to herself in the third person" character usually annoys the hell out of me, but for some reason I like Shiro. Maybe it's because she actually does seem mysterious and strange, as opposed to just pretending to be.

True. Her whole act kind of took me out of the show but it did not hurt that bad from me watching it all together.

This seems to be a great season! I maybe like 2 shows per season and maybe 1 that i will actually will enjoy watching, at least when it comes to newer shows.

This show is totally up my alley. I actually find Shiro to be quite cute and entertaining; they animated her quite like what I imagined. Regarding what others whom dislike her- she is critically involved in the plot (I've read the manga) so I suggest you try to warm up to her or at least get used to her presence because she's not going anywhere.

I did notice they cut some things out from the manga spoiler[most critically Ami's presence] which kind of worries me about what they plan on doing with this series; frankly, it's so well executed done I had an inkling of a hope they were going to animate all 43 (or so) of the currently released chapters. Probably a bit much, but I don't think it's a pipe dream to hope for 26 episodes (or a season 2).

I'm watching a few other series of this season (Tiger and Bunny, Stein's Gate, and Hanasaku Iroha), yet I still think Deadman Wonderland is my current favorite of the season. That opinion may change with more episodes released-we'll see.

I am thoroughly impressed with Deadman Wonderland. I find the social issues that the series brings to the forefront were intriguing. Yes the way it presents the issues are definitely over the top but the message was clear for me.

I find that the main message of Deadman Wonderland is how hedonistic we have become. Yes, most of the people in Deadman Wonderland are criminals but lets not forget that some of them including our main hero are innocent. Even though some of the inmates are violent criminals, by putting their lives on the line as a form of entertainment. By enjoying human suffering, who is the real criminal at that point? Are you any better than a prison inmate?

It also shows the corruption of the current justice system. If you are killing off your inmates and if you are running your prison as a business, considering that Deadman Wonderland is privately owned. At all costs the customers must be entertained so you need new entertainment added regularly.

With all of it's action it's good to see an anime series that makes me think.

I just saw episode 2 and I'm still not sure if I like this anime or not. A couple of things bother me....

1 & 2: Simple, it's all a setup, the "public defender" is obviously behind it all, and in a position where no one questions him.

3: Deadman Wonderland also functions as an amusement park. Others probably think she's just in her costume.

Exactly. Most of the details were probably not known to the public, so the trial was just a show to give them enough cover to do what they wanted to do. The outcome was obviously fixed, evidence was unnecessary for that, the judges had to have been in on it. Also, bare in mind that the Japanese justice system is completely different from the US, they try cases using a supreme-court like panel of judges, and only recently (after this series was written) added a "jury of ones' peers" element to the system.

Oh, this injustice. I'm so jealous. Last time I was driven to a hopeless situation I don't recall getting any super power or cute girls by my side.

But to hell with that. Am I the only one who'd love to be the red thingie?

One thing I'm not digging is that sometimes typical anime/manga thing were a protagonist is subjected to ridiculous amounts of cruelty/humiliation.

I think they're sort of compensating for the 90% of other shows that take place in completely peaceful settings (or so it seems). Frankly, I somewhat understand them... but unfortunately they would probably then drastically change course, with the protagonist magically surmounting impossible odds, which I find more annoying.
No, but I agree in the sense that this cruelty/humiliation mostly serves the sole purpose of making the show darker/edgier...

On the retarded girl sidekick: I don't have as much of an allergy to the type (yet), but they all seem to be voiced by Kana Hanazawa this season. Does she ever get any time off, I wonder? Seriously, the Japanese should know what 'moderation' is.

The first episode i liked the second not so much but now I'm loving this series. This has a lot of potential to be very good. My only grip is the girl in the series. Her voice is extremely annoying and very offputing. Its like nails on a chalk board the whole time she's talking. It completely takes me out of the moment that anything is going on. My only grip about.

As for the whole cruelty thing. I love it! Yes I know , its messed up and I dont take it serious at all but this brings me back to the days of when really anything went and there were no rules and no punches were held back at all. Now mostly this was Hentai back in the 80's and 90's but it's still nice to see something push the limit. Gantz had the potential but then screwed it up by well just being stupid.

Also to clarify the retarded girl sidekick statement. I'm talking about simple minded girls that just get in the way and are annoying, who for some unknown reason have super powers and really get in the way of a good story.

I thought Shiro was very interesting and cute... at first. When she suddenly started going all tsundere and then making cartoon-y faces in episode three, I became thoroughly disenchanted -___- What a horrible waste.

may have to drop this sooner rather than later. If I were the type to be entertained by sadism I'd watch torture-porn like the Saw movies.

I'm almost positive that last scene didn't happen in the manga. I thought it was a pretty cool addition myself. But yeah, if you hate sadism you better quit now before spoiler[Carnival Corpse] starts.
