The problem of how well sales might hold up into its 12th or 24th or 60th issue is a tough one to crack. This sort of verges into basically Kickstarter territory, but I wonder if any physical manga publishers in the US have considered pre-sales or annual subscriptions to try to finance a longer-term project like that. If you can count on someone pre-purchasing the next 20 volumes at a discount, that might help with some of the risk management for starting work on a longer series that you have reason to think has a devoted enough fan base to make it worth the effort.
