I'm something of a hypodrite, because I accept the blender of characters in something like Fullmetal Alchemist, but not in Oh Look, Another Harem Show! It's probably because I like the main characters enough to give the side characters a pass.

If they would just make the glasses girl or the big boobed girl different from their counterparts in other titles! As soon as I see an ensemble cast of girls in an opening, I feel like crying, because I'm under the impression that between them, you couldn't create one decent character.

Personally, I feel that the ending of the original Area 88 manga is much worse and certainly less elegantly crafted. I probably talked about it four years ago.

You know, as someone who does largely agree with you about the OVA ending by this point in time...I actually don't think you talked about the manga itself in detail during that podcast, much less discussed its ending. The Area 88 OVA and the later TV series? Yes, but not the original source material. In fact, I must have listened to that episode a fair number of times on my old iPod during my commute and the comparative lack of information about the manga was perhaps the only major issue that stood out.

Not that this should discourage anyone from listening to the AWO podcast or, much less, watching Area 88, but I do think it's important to be as accurate as possible about this.

Hmm, you may very well be right. That episode was recorded back when I'd speak for an hour then cut it down to 15, so perhaps talk of the manga got cut for time constraints along with wondering why the ADV dub opted to add in American fighter jet lingo ("Fox One," "Splash One," etc) to places where they was no audio previously. I don't know if that terminology is universal, but the cast is by and large not American and the story takes place in the Middle East. In any case, the ending to the Area 88 manga is rather...odd. Should I spoiler this? I guess I will, since this manga despite its age was never released to completion in the US and no English edition exists (and so I have never truly "read" it):

spoiler[Shin flies back to Area 88. Area 88 is destroyed. Every single other member of Area 88 is killed except for Shin. Shin ends up fighting Kanzaki (who happens to be there and in his own fighter jet despite having been arrested a while back) in a one on one duel where Shin ultimately kills him...but Shin himself is shot down. He survives the crash, and it turns out he's got partial amnesia as a result of said crash that causes him to forget everything that happened to him over the last three years, which is more or less the duration of his stay in Area 88. He goes back to Japan and lives happily ever after with Ryoko, with no memory of Area 88 or any ill effects.]

It is my opinion that this ending is incredibly contrived and only serves to completely undermine the themes of the series and the character arc of the hero, Shin Kazama. It certainly contains what the readers "want" to happen, but that doesn't necessarily mean it "should" happen. The way it stands in the anime, everyone has more or less accepted who they are and what they've become as a result of being mercenary pilots, and is 100% ready to accept this. They are so accepting of it that they choose to fight of their own volition despite being given alternatives. Shin's journey as a character is complete once he takes off his air intake, identifies himself, says "GO!"...and smiles.

What happens after the point where the anime ends really doesn't matter. That was the demonstrated point of the rest of the anime. Or maybe I'm just giving it too much credit since this was literally the anime I was watching when I was 15.

In regards to the lack of "officially licensed" hentai, quite a few artist consider their creations like children so why would they want to put their children in those situations?

All I can imagine is some creator going "You want to do what, to who, with WHAT?O_o"

Brings up the question about hentai artists with non-pornograhpic manga, games, or what not such as Tony Taka or Inazuma. I'd imagine they can't do porn of it themselves because of contract stipulations.

When I was in Korea, I didn't really see much of what qualified as their own animation. They have an all-anime-and-cartoon channel, which was one of my few sources of entertainment over there but most of it was Korean dubs of anime or American cartoons like Courage the Cowardly Dog. I guess that Ragnarok game is technically their work, right? Does that count?
