Usually I'd be more upset at yet another snub for anime, but I'm too busy angsting about Carol being the biggest loser of this awards season.

It kind of bums me out that When Marnie Was There didn't win, being Studio Ghibli's last film for the indeterminable future and all, but at least the winner this year was actually deserving of the award. Inside Out was a fantastic offering from Pixar. Overall the nominees this year for Best Animated Feature were quite varied and very good. It's really just the nominations that should be important anyway, since those are the films people who are actively a part of the industry vote for. The reason non-Disney and/or Pixar films have a hard time winning is because the actual old geezers who make the final vote couldn't care less about animation as a whole. You know, because it's for children. Never mind that no less than three of the five nominations directly addressed heavy themes of depression and social anxiety.

In the long run though, no one really cares about how many Oscars a film has won, it's the general quality and how well the films connect with the audience that's truly important. I mean, I liked Birdman well enough when I saw it after hearing about its Oscar win for Best Picture last year, but it hardly left any permanent emotional impression on me like many films of 2014 actually did.
