This has been known many years ago from an old Seventeen Magazine interview:

But then for her to state in this recent interview that she isn't sure how popular Sailor Moon was just contradicts all that.

Because she isn't sure how popular it is in the US? Do people, let alone casual fans? Or can only estimate in relative terms? It was definitely popular in Canada.

isn't that Kirsten Dunst? At lease she voiced an anime, and did an AMV in Akiba.

@enurtsol - That picture of Kirsten Dunst made my freakin' day. She's too adorable!

Yes, THIS. Kudos to fans who have an encyclopedic knowledge of anime, but that doesn't make a person a "true anime fan". If any kind of anime brings joy to a person, that's enough reason for me to consider them a fellow anime fan. It's hard to gauge Megan Fox's knowledge of anime from one interview, but even if she isn't as knowledgeable as some of us, there's no reason for people to be so skeptical of her interests. She may know very little about anime, but if she loves what she knows, then more power to her.

This. Plus, how many Hollywood personalities out there who are able to name any anime outside Ghibli stuffs?

I'm not a huge fan of Megan Fox but my opinion of her improved when I read about her anime interests a while back. Apparently, she's actually a bit of a shut in who enjoys watching anime and playing computer games (which is probably why she stays out of the gossip mags as someone stated earlier). I found that really endearing and relatable. Laughing

1. I don't think her Pacific Rim comment was meant to say, "Pacific Rim follows the story of Gundam Wing, and obviously is thematically similar to Gundam Wing." I think she just meant to say that Pacific Rim is a recent movie that did the giant robot thing-- which to a lot of EW readers who might not know what Gundam anything is, that might help them understand that comment.

Had she not mentioned Pacific Rim, I guarantee you someone would've said, "UM WELL they did do giant robots with Pacific Rim soooooo."

2. There's nothing wrong with liking mainstream anime, especially if that's what you're exposed to. And this applies not only to Megan Fox, but just people in general. This "So-and-so isn't a real fan of [this genre] because they only like [these shows]" has been going on since the birth of fandom. It's so old.

Quite frankly, calling it "name-dropping" for someone to say, "I like these shows, I would love to see a movie" is silly. Lot of so-called "real" anime fans like Gundam Wing and Sailor Moon. This goes back to the elitism that runs rampant in so many fandoms. "This person is such a CASUAL. It's okay for us to like Sailor Moon and be excited about a remake, but only within the narrow confines of what we've deemed is acceptable to be excited about Sailor Moon; everyone else is a poser."

Nobody has to "prove" they're a "real" fan of anything. That's childish and exclusionary.

Indeed. I, personally, think it's actually pretty cool that she likes anime, or at least the mainstream ones.

If someone that didn't have a clue about Gundam asked me about it, Pacific Rim would likely be one of the things I bring up to try and describe it, along with maybe Voltron and Evangelion. Doesn't mean they're the same exact thing.

For the most part this is true, and Ms. Fox isn't running her mouth in these interviews saying she's a master anime fan that knows more about anime than any other fan out there, so I don't have a problem with it. I do think it's cool she is a fan and knows of these properties.

Do you guys put the fedora's on before or after making your forum posts?

I cosplay as Indiana Jones on a daily basis, so I wear mine before, during, and after. I'm also thinking of putting together a Fuyuhiko Kuzuryuu cosplay, and he just so happens to be depicted with a fedora in promo art. Razz

That said, I'm not a big fan of Megan Fox either, but I really do think you're all ragging on her too much. Good for her that she likes anime. Now let's go back to ignoring her like we usually do.

What is with you Evatologist a-holes who can't accept that Gundam is one of the influences for Pacific Rim? ANN even wrote a story with a link where GDT himself says as such. You're just bitter because your emo porn mass-merchandise show has become a joke, and no one cares about it any more. Rolling Eyes

It sound like the certain titles she was exposed to, she liked. Cool. I can sleep better at night. Rolling Eyes

Also I see that any woman in a yellow jacket is instantly April O'Neil. Very Happy

The second I saw the thread title I knew there was gonna be a bunch of whining and petty insults thrown around in this thread. "EEEW, Megan Fox, TRUE FANS, Hollywood, they ruin everything, anime fans have standards." So I stayed away. Heaven forbid someone shows interest without being judged. Those nasty, nasty casuals. Especially if they're Hollywood.

I like hearing when someone else enjoys something I do, especially in a realm of entertainment that's niche. It's a connection.

I'm happy with the amount of people arguing back. Thank you, reasonable fandom. This is one of the reasons why I still choose to hang out at ANN.

Just cause it was influenced by it doesn't mean it's anything like it, though Laughing Most western media influenced by Japanese media don't really capture the essence of what they're borrowing from. At the end of the day these works are written by Americans and oozing with American sensibilities and aesthetics.

Sadly all too often American credit is also taken as well.

Keep her talking. Every time she opens her mouth she shows the world how dumb she is.

Gundam Wing is nothing like Pacific Rim. And Wing is over, why do you think Sunrise keeps returning to Universal Century Gundam.

I'm sorry that Megan Fox is not deep into the knowledge of Gundam and was having a casual talk where she made mention of similarities between two giant robot things.

What a terrible and dumb person.

I've just heard that Megan Fox would say that she wouldn't mind a live-action version of "Sailor Moon" or "Gundam Wing." Like her,I have no problem with them doing those sort of projects myself. Just as long as it's handled well,I don't see what the big deal is. I don't know if any of those things will see the light of day,but it'll be interesting to see.

Except Pacific Rim is like Gundam in that the Coyote Tango and the Guntank have the same shoulder canons. The more you know...
