THAT'S the guy. Why the hell was I thinking of a Kunihiko? Was I mixing him up with Kunihiko Yuyama?

Regardless, definitely a senior moment over here... Neutral

I sat next to him, I was the Nami cosplayer who got the first question (and for some reason can't sound erudite in person), and he was grumpily huffing about his five-hour energy and how he wanted something better, I pointed out that they give out whatever, and hey I got Dragonball Z coasters. Incidentally he left his energy on the seat afterwards, and I got it. Anime smile

Hah, then I was standing behind you in line when you were going for your second question Smile

I like how people throw around the word 'generic' around. I'd say it's even more over/misused than 'pretentious' and pretty much just means 'something I don't like'.

How the hell is an anime about a guy who studies his alchemy powers via sucking a girl's breasts generic? Or a show about female anthropomorphic guns? Or magic saliva?

These are probably some of the more creative shows out there. Surely less generic than another 'boy discovers music' show like Apollo, no? I liked that when it was called BECK. Or maybe Gravitation would be a better fit due to blatant Kaoru x Sentaro shenanigans.

Or To-Y, Ai Shite Night, Kaikan Phase, NANA, etc. That it's specifically jazz and takes place in the 60s is what sets it apart, otherwise what would be notably exceptional about it?

Yeah, I think it's great that you guys are getting a lot of what you enjoy.

For me, I actually am only a fan of a couple anime series a season because my tastes really are more in-line with the people that work for the site, but I don't have an elitist attitude about it. I don't think my tastes make me superior. Everyone should be allowed to enjoy what they enjoy without getting harrassed about it.

My tastes don't really align with ANN's that well, but I'm probably among those regarded as 'elitist' on the forums. The thing is when I write something it's not something consciously elitist, or even consciously aimed at putting down others. It's just my thoughts articulated openly. It's the way I think.

Partly because in other media consumption (books, movies or music) that I'm into, this kind of open articulation of judgment based on taste is so normal, I'm always kind of surprised when I see a backlash on ANN.

Yeah, this "I'm sooooo into (X-thing) that I take any and all criticism super-personally" is a strange beast. Though I do quite often see it in K-pop fandom (so yeah folks, if you see yourself in my comment you're on par with 13-year-old K-pop fangirls, stick that in your pipe and smoke it) where it's equally tiring and non-conducive to meaningful conversation.

Edit because I just gotta: Zac, that's really not you singing for New Division, right? I really dig this EP either way but gosh I could swear... (also, I'm getting giddy Kings of Convenience remix/Erland Øye flashbacks upon listening to certain tracks yet again *passes out in happiness*)

Edit 2: Maybe it's just the "Your face shining Like Gold" line in Bucharest but damn the KoC remix flashbacks...

From what I understand of K-pop culture companies and agencies encourage that kind of behavior: the fan and the producer/artiste are in a contract of sorts. The fan defends their idol and guarantees the idol's success. The company provides official fan clubs that reward fans with things like backstage passes, etc. You've even got colour codes for certain idols, like the glowstick you wave stands for what idol you stand for. The idol must not have a boyfriend or girlfriend, etc. because without the fan the idol is nothing.

I wonder if the anime fandom plays out similarly on the Japanese end.

My friend who is into moe just laughs it off when I say that his stuff looks like kiddy porn ("which artbook should I get, the one that appeals to my inner child or the one that appeals to my inner pedophile?"). It may just be that these kind of things don't fly as well in written interaction as they do in verbal.

The same generally applies to Japanese idols/actors too, though I see it most often regarding Korean media because it's more popular lately (sad [for some] but true, folks). It's not a K-pop thing, it's like an Asian-idol thing. In such it's still pretty dumb and obviously not interested in constructive criticism. If you want us even to consider pop music in terms of artistic merit (as I often do, and I think folks should) you've got to let us make valid criticisms.

perfectly happy with how it is. i rarely have enough time to follow everything i want to on a weekly basis. if it was more, i don't know if i'd be able to.
also, i don't have actually have to try hard to find some aspect about the next generic giant boobs- or helpless girls-show that i can like. i just don't care. there's plenty i can do, when i don't watch anime. for example, think about.

Well, one who watches almost anything is the local equivalent of the couch potato who accepts whatever's on with a low bar to be entertained, in lieu of other functions. Laughing

But anyways, anime fans can be elitist with regards to other forms of entertainment too, like they think it makes them automatically better surveyors of quality, so it goes both ways.

Nah, fans just need better self-humor apropos deficiencies of their chosen forms of entertainment. Laughing

Got a good laugh from the 4Kids guy. I do agree with Zac and Justin that it;s about time people got over their One Piece dub. Do also agree it;s pretty bad to make fun of people losing their jobs, especially the voice actors because with Media Blasters also being pretty much dead their out of work and it's a shame since many of them are pretty good when not doing a 4Kids dub.

Was also interesting to see that they did express some concern over a lot of the big shonen titles starting to wind down and come to an end. It really will be interesting to see how Viz tries to cope with the loss of Naruto in about a year.

As much as I do not care for 4kids I do feel bad about the people losing their jobs. While I will not be listening to the podcast I do have agree that people need to get over 4kids dubs.

They ruined more than One Piece, you know. Not everyone who hates 4Kids is a One Piece fanboy. Ojamajo Doremi fanboys, Tokyo Mew Mew fanboys, Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters fanboys, Pocket Monsters fanboys, Shaman King fanboys, etc. They were hated long before they licensed One Piece.

Being a fanboy is a good thing?

nope never, being a hardcore fan-boy or fan-girl is the reason why I don't even watch some series. I"ll admit to being a higurashi/umineko/higanbana fan boy myself but I don't ruin other peoples fun for those franchises.

And fanboys of those shows have been hated even longer and to this day for exactly this reason. It's been years. They localized stupid kids shows in a way to appeal to kids. Get over yourself, stop celebrating people being laid off and get off your stupid cross, already.

A show about a loser getting a MYSTERIOUS, MAGICAL GIRLFRIEND(seriously, it's in the title) out of nowhere...but with DROOL? CREATIVE! A pack of fetish-codified moe girls in a special school flocking around a single guy...but they're GUNS?(as opposed to airplanes or dogs) LESS GENERIC!

Really, "elitist", "we win out in the end...", "the good of anime." If you're going to be this blatantly self-conscious about people not liking what you do, at least have some perspective and self-awareness.
