A while ago I saw this Answerman column (read the very first e-mail question):

animenewsnetwork.com/answerman/2010-04-10

And I'm wondering, why don't more people try to do this? As in try to see if they can produce their own original content?

A lot of people already do this, because this is what Artist Alleys are for, right? I don't know much about the American doujinshi scene, but several European countries have very active ones.

Many American conventions have an area that's like a second dealerroom where people can sell their fan-art, fanzines and the like. I'm not very familiar with the American doujishi offering, though.

In countries like France, Germany and the Netherlands the community is very active and has quite a lot of people drawing comics independantly. They work in groups and publish their comics themselves. Some groups and individual artists produce high level works (example) and are quite popular within their country's anime/manga community.

Last time I tried my own doujinshi I discovered finding a place to print a limited number of copies of my doujin was next to impossible, for a decent price. Haven't looked recently, but that right there is a major killer for this sort of thing.

I don't mean to print it, I mean putting it up for free on the Internet somewhere even, even if it's just /a/ or something. Because the way I see it, you could either whine about how you can't make a manga because nobody will pay for it, or you can whine about how nobody will buy your manga, but at least it's been made for people to appreciate.

I'd say anywhere that there is a anime fan community there will be fan art. Now I have to honestly say that I don't enjoy to much of the non Japanese Doujinshi but I can stand some of it. And it's out there in just about every country.

So with that said, if I want to find someone who's willing to help me, how do I do that?

Depends on how you want to do it, I guess. If you're already a competent artist and can write and draw your own stories, you could think about starting a doujinshi circle. Being in a circle has several advantages:
-You can work on books together, making it easier to produce something thicker than 40 pages.
-You can split the printing costs and later on use the circle's funds to pay for printing.
-You can get useful feedback whenever you want.
You can find members for your circle on anime forums. Check the fan-art subforums or something. Don't just look for the ones that can draw pretty pictures, you want people who know a thing or two about drawing comics.

When you've got 3-5 people together, it's time to work on your first book. Your debut is very important, because it could make or break your circle. Original, non-pornografic stories are somewhat of a risk, but sell well enough if properly done. Humor doujinshi is easy to sell, especially when it's actually funny. You could base them on an existing series for better sales. In any case, make sure your book isn't just a mishmash of stories. Pick a theme or series and stick to it.

Another option is producing doujinshi alone, but it's hard to get started because of the costs. Bound books look nice, but are very expensive to print (the one in the example cost €9 per book to print!). Instead, you could go for something held together with staples for your first project. Make sure it's in black and white and it's suddenly a lot cheaper to produce.

Starting a webcomic is different of course. In that case you just need a webpage to put your comic on. You can be all professional about it, but some people prefer to simply use DeviantArt or a blog.

If you've got your books printed, it's time to sell it. The easiest way to do this is at conventions. Some conventions have a special area where artists can do this after registering before the convention. This areas often also have tables for people who draw fan-art, but haven't made a proper book (yet). Other conventions prefer to place doujinshika in the dealerroom. While this gives better exposure, it's also more expensive, because you do have to pay for the table. You can also contact your local comic shop and ask if they want to (try to) sell a few copies.

Nah, I just hang out with the (aspiring) artists and sometimes help them out at small conventions. A good friend of mine is a comics artist, part of a circle and reviews doujinshi for a magazine I write for as well.
