I am not sure if this is the sub-forum to ask this question, but here it goes:
I’ve noticed quires few anime and manga (most recently Yuwara and You’re Under arrest), that often when a rich or otherwise high status person drives a luxury import car that the steering wheel is on the left side.
Is this actually a status symbol in Japan or some other part of Japanese culture or just the anime/manga emphasizing that it is an import car?
Otherwise, why wouldn’t they get a car with the steering wheel on the right like the other cars in Japan of which I would think would be more practical if not safer? And it would be rather pointless to have a Rolls-Royce or Jaguar with the steering wheel in the left side.

I guess it could be seen as a status symbol. "Hey, look at this car I got from another country!" People over here do stuff like that too.

Yeah, but even if you got a car from another country, why would your Bentley be left-hand-drive? That's what Teankun was asking.

Sounds like the easiest way to make sure everyone knows you're driving a foreign car.

Actually, I did a search on the internet and you can buy used Bentleys in Japan with left-hand-drive. Huh.

Is it even legal to use a car of the wrong chirality?

@Galap I don't see solid grounds for making it illegal. The car can still drive on either side of the road.

Not in New Zealand. Guys here love importing classic American cars and then showing them off around town. Where-ever they go people drool like crazy.

You can't drive left hand drive cars here in Australia, you have to get them converted to Right hand drive.
I think there are some exceptions made for vintage cars of certain sorts which fall more into hobby or collectible status but that is about it.

I remember spotting a parked car one day that had a right hand drive, so I assume that in Canada you can drive on whatever side you want, so long as you're on the proper side of the road.

Well I believe it's legal in most of Europe.
But I've never noticed this. Maybe they buy their cars from US, second-hand. When thinking of a luxury car you tend to think of Germany. Germans drive on the proper (right) side of the road so maybe that's it, I doubt it though.

It's certainly legal in the UK and Europe. We'd not function if we didn't let folk from the continent bring their cars over on the ferry and vice versa.

Other than USPS cars, I've only ever seen one car driving with the wheel on the right side

Lol someone always has to pipe up with a comment like that, there is no proper side of the road to drive on sheesh.
