First of all, I am sincerely sorry if this is already a thread, or is not a suitable thread to start---if it is, I'm happy to delete it or see it moved/deleted.
Now, I've been researching investing in a region free Blu-ray player for a long time, especially since they have some series not available in the states. I thought others may be wondering about the difference in quality between the releases so that they can make an educated purchase, and starting a thread for input from people who have already done so (or purchased/reviewed at least one release),might be helpful. Once again, I hope this thread can be helpful to people wondering about releases on the other side of the pond, and can list some of the specs left out on a lot of websites. -Roseversailles |

Don't import any UK BluRays released by a company called Kaze. The quality is absolutely shocking, for example cramming an entire 13 episode show onto 1 disc, discs not playing on certain models of player, no signs only tracks. I could go on. Pretty much all the UK anime fans I know will import US releases of their shows.

That sounds awful! I know they got a lot of complaints for their Mawaru Penguindrum DVDs concerning the signs not being translated, and generally poor subtitles. The Sentai release of Penguindrum wasn't exactly stellar (iffy subtitles, not as high a bitrate as the Japanese releases), but they were preferable to the Kaze DVDs.
Any word on MVM? My eyes are burning a hole into their Fate/Zero release (not crazy about the packaging, but that price! ), but from all of my research on the web, all I've uncovered is that they have episodes spread out across two discs vs. Aniplex's three (for the Hybrid release), with Dolby Digital for the English track and LPCM for the Japanese track on the Aniplex release (MVM has LPCM for both tracks). What I haven't been able to find out is bitrate: Aniplex's release supposedly fluctuates between a healthy 32 to 40 kbps, but I cannot find the specs for MVM. Anyone have any previous experience with MVM, or their Fate/Zero release in particular? |

MVM Blurays seem acceptable as far as I can tell (I don't actually have a BR player so I'm just going off what others have said) If you browse this forum there's a lot of discussion about the quality of various UK releases.

Also thought I'd post Ghibli specs for anyone that's curious, as a reference of sorts. I'll list the JP video bitrate and audio specs, followed by the US and UK specs.
Full disclosure: I have not gotten all of these specs by myself. All of the UK and JP release values have been taken from a Studio Ghibli comparison thread on Blu-ray.com. I'd be happy to link to them if anyone would like me to, all credit goes to them. Just listing this here for those who may not have seen the info otherwise.
