I think its more along the lines of a a non-human entity, creating a human-like entity to interact with the world for them. So they are non-humans who created a "sub species" like elves, and the like. So the possibility of breeding is okay.

Also Eureka Seven AO throws another kink into this idea, and might be more inline with what you are talking about.
