jigoku: Hey! Johnny Depp's a good actor. He's one of the few ex-teen idols who's continued to be taken seriously after he hit 30. "From Hell" was just the fault of the studio wanting him to reprise his character from Sleepy Hollow. But I'd imagine(or at least hope) that the studio would want someone with experience like Ken Watanabe to play the lead. Though they'll probably settle for Luke Wilson. *shudder*

I just wanted to point out that that actually links to a VCD copy of the first twelve episodes. You can find the DVD copy here: http://www.popular.com.sg/jsp/product/product_detail.jsp?vca001=0&vpd001=61240 A bit more expensive than the VCDs, but still not too bad. |

Anyone checked the DVDs out yet? Since this is a Singapore company, I'm worried that the subtitles will technically be in English, but be completely incomprehensible to any native English speaker.

To be frank, your post sounds discriminating. Every Singaporean received post-independence education is a native English speaker. School kids learn English as their first language at school, plus one of Chinese Mandarin, Malay, or Tamil as their second language. Have you ever heard Lee Kuan Yew's speech in perfect English? Way better than your average American John Doe. I wish Ken Hayashi was still around. Used to be an active ANN user, he's now a mod at Animenfo. |

My dad just visited Singapore on a business trip, and didn't have any trouble understanding anyone - he was very impressed with the English-language skills of everyone he spoke with while there.
I do have one question, however - does Singapore use the PAL or NTSC format for their DVDs? Region-encoding shouldn't be a problem for me, but as I understand things, viewing PAL formated disks can prove be a rather tricky endeavour in this Golden Land of Oportunity (laughs). -Alex |

Singapore uses PAL. Wish the next generation of digital TV can solve this stupid incompatibility (it's worse than region coding) once and for all. In the mean time I'd use a computer to watch them. |

Did you really think I would post that if the nearly worthless warranty was the only thing at stake? Who gives a damn if the expired 90-day warranty is ignored? It's the fact that you're now breaking US LAW simply by hitting a few buttons on your remote that pisses me off.
US Copyright Code Title 17, Chapter 12, Section 1201: (a) Violations Regarding Circumvention of Technological Measures.— (1) (A) No person shall circumvent a technological measure that effectively controls access to a work protected under this title. http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/html/uscode17/usc_sec_17_00001201----000-.html This basically means that doing anything to your DVD player that allows it to give you more access than it did when you first bought it (such as allowing you to watch Region 2 DVD's) is basically illegal. Bringing in a Region 2 DVD player and Region 2 DVD is not illegal, per se, but the moment you use them to watch a Region 2 DVD within the Region 1 area you're probably running afoul of the law. Does this mean that people are going to be breaking down your door as a result of you watching a Region 2/3/4/5/6 DVD in the US? No, of course not, but in theory they could and their actions would comply with US law. If you think the DMCA was bad, just wait until you see what's around the next corner. Then again, the average American is so trusting of our corporate stewards that they're unlikely to even to notice they no longer have control of their own media any more. In theory the newer systems like the upcoming PS3 could prevent you from re-selling whatever game you just beat and doing anything to get around that protection would put you in violation of US law. Additional legislation currently being written by Corporate America could allow for fines far beyond anything you'll ever earn in your lifetime and jail times that could exceed what you might get for a rape conviction. http://www.eff.org/ |

To start with, I just want to say that you Americans have my deepest sympathies when it comes to consumer laws as ours in the UK aren't as bad as yours...
On another note, if you have any DVD's that are from other regions such as R1 or R3 or even any R2 from Japan and they're not BBFC certified [they're the evil scum that thinks Hentai's bad even though they'll allow crap like Crash to pass as 18 uncut and Elfen Lied which is good in its own way to be released in the UK as a 15 when it should be a 18] then you can't sell them 2nd-hand in any second-hand stores or specialist shops that would buy them like GameStation or CEX and the only way you could sell them on is privately through eBay or various other means. Basically it's mainly to cover the asses of the movie distributors over here considering a) Most of their DVD releases are crap especially where anime is concerned as we pay practically twice as much for a DVD as the Americans and b) a lot of the time, we get our DVD releases a lot later than the R1 releases! [although in some cases we get one-up on you guys, Smallville being an example as we've already got the Season 5 boxset over here!] And don't even get me started when it comes to videogame console modification! Over here, it's illegal because some old fogey of a judge who probably doesn't know the first thing about modern technology probably got a backhander from Sony and instantly declared modchips to be illegal! If I want to be able to play the latest imports from Japan or the States of games that won't be available for ages in Europe [FFXII being one horrible example] or not available at all [the list is too long to count especially the amount of Japanese RPG's and anime-based games in English!] but let's just say that there's still a lot of modders in the UK defying the law and things won't be changing anytime soon when the PS3 and the Wii comes out in the future. [even if Sony has made a pig's ear of things over here in Europe concerning PR] |

Whoa, did I touch a nerve? Maybe you should write a rant to "Hey Answerman" about the DMCA, ignorant americans, and import anime. Take my word, I'm no fan of the DMCA... I'll leave it at that. |

It is wrong to say that just because we're in Singapore our English is necessarily bad... It's the most spoken language here after all, and while there are more than a few people over here who like to talk in rily bad singlish cos u tok oso nobody care what, surely they not so blur one what... But most of our mass media is in rather understandable English.
However, I have my doubts as to the quality of this disc. I'm not a real expert on them or anything, but I've watched about 10+ releases by them and their translation sometimes leaves much to be desired. At any rate I don't think it really matches up to the standards of US DVDs... But at the same time, it's actually within purchasing range for me. Of course, I will be getting this once I secretly save up enough money.... |

quote, GATSU: "Johnny Depp's a good actor."
sure he might be (i'm sure his looks only got him some of his success... *cough*). but being a decent actor doesnt save him from being a living cliche... anyway there are no youngish, famous japamericans to fill kenzo's shoes. they'd have to change his nationality or something. make him chinese and call in jackie chan! i'd give that a w00t! tenma the neurosurgeon by day, furious-fisted martial artist by night, taking on the evil johann in superrifical fisticuffs! hoorah! and no, i have no clue if i'm even being sarcastic. |

Yeah i saw the VCD box i didn't wanna buy it since i want the englidh track. IT sucks here in Singapore because of this. I mean i donot mind shelling out cash for anime, but it would be decent to have an English audio track to watch, since that my first choice prefrence, rarely will you come across anime in english, thu releases are very fast here, naruto is above 135

that shop, popular.com, wants as much for shipping as the item itself - makes the total $72 (£22) instead of £11 plus a reasonable rate for shipping. anyone find an alternative source or an ebay listing for these official releases? |
