I joined that club long ago.... anyway I already went and watched macross and can recommend it (though the visuals aren't eye poppingly good, but it was 1982) Macross plus is good looking though. I don't know so much about macross 7, Personally it doesn't seem to be as well regarded as other parts of the franchise so I might skip it, my viewing order is gonna be

Macross -> Macross Plus -> Do you remember love -> Macross zero -> Macross Frontier (wheeeeeee.....)

EDIT: The OP is pretty good, it's got a good epic feel, I wonder if they'll keep the ed as "Do you remember love" though

Heh. You can add another member to the club. I've just hooked my brother on Frontier. He said that he wanted to watch the episode after seeing a scene involving Ranka, and after hounding him all afternoon I finally got him to sit down and watch it (he normally says he'll watch something but never does). He was blown away just as much as I was. He'll be following it from week to week along with me, which is a first for him.

But if it's a sequel of Macross 7 like has been said, are we going to have to watch that one as well?

Well, it's a sequel, but it's set a couple of decades after Macross 7, so it shouldn't really be a requirement. I'd be willing to bet that the only connections it has with Macross 7 is the big Macross Frontier colonization ship (same design as the Battle/City 7), and the current cannon-fodder VF-171 variable fighters (which are essentially updated VF-17 Nightmares). At most, some characters or events may be mentioned off-hand. That said, Macross 7 isn't exactly THAT bad, just not as good as the earlier installments in the franchise, so I recommend doing a taste test of it if you're undertaking your big Macross journey.

Still, I demand only one thing from Frontier: more bridge bunny moments. :3

Well, if it isn't required then I'll probably try it out latter at some point, though I'm not sure when that'll be....... Heck, I'm even not sure when I'll get around to the original! Anime dazed Plus is easy for now since it's only 4 episodes though, so we'll see.

as mentioned in the best buy sale thread Robotech takes Macross, Mospeda and Southern Cross (three totally unrelated series) and combines them into one (while Macross escapes relatively intact it's still edited for TV)

I say, get to it as soon as you possibly can! It's one of those shows that I'd recommend to anyone without blinking. Anime hyper

Well, the really basic, basic Macross crash course is really Do You Remember Love? and Macross Plus. If you don't have the time to sit through everything right now, these two will do the trick.

The latest 30 Second CM has some awesome scenes in it at the 12 and 16 second mark

Hmm. Only got around to seeing the CM right now. And yeah, those scenes look awesome. At the 12 second mark, that looks like Ozma's VF-25 with the armored pack (in atmosphere?) letting loose with the Macross trademark Itano Circus. I... I can't wait for this. <drooling>

That's good to hear, because I don't have the time to watch the original series, since Frontier is right around the corner. I'll start with the "basic, basic crash course" then. Smile

I'll go back and watch the original series and Zero sometime in the future.

Yeah, I think that's what I'm going to do myself. And it looks like Zero's only 5 episodes, so I might be able to do that fairly soon as well. Any idea as to which order we should watch them at?

Good thing we don't have to watch the premiere episode since we've already seen it, since that gives us time to watch some of these. Wink

I don't have time to watch anything new right now. I've run into a few things at school, so the only stuff I'm watching includes whatever I'm finishing from this season.

Is there a projected length for series out?

Nothing concrete yet but it's hard to see this being as long as Macross 7 or even the original and maintain the animation quality of the first episode. So the safe bet is in the 2 cour range (26 eps) but who knows, it might do the split season thing like Code Geass, Gundam 00 and Clannad.

Also I'm thinking there'll be a love triangle like in SDF Macross, it could be Sheryl X Alto X Ranka but I'm not sure, for one thing that would make Ranka and Sheryl similiar for both being idol singers (isn't a given that Ranka goes idol as a minmay clone? It says in all the official stuff she's an aspiring idol)

I think this will be a case of an established star in Sheryl Nome versus the next big thing in Ranka Lee. We will probably see Sheryl grow more human throughout the series thanks to Alto while Ranka deals with all the problems in becoming a star.

However what about that officer that was escorting sheryl around, she didn't say much, but she could be the third prong of the love triangle (plus Alto and her had a short argument in the episode) and she would make a neat parallel to Misa being an officer and all.

The Misa lookalike is Kathy Glass who's voiced by one of my recent additions to my fav VA list in Sanae Kobayashi. She seems to be using her Lucy from Elfen Lied voice which is what made me add her one of my favorites. Anyway I love how she resembles Misa so much, nice tribute by Satelite to the original series.

As for your spoiler comment.. spoiler[IIRC Kawamori swore to never use Hikaru/Misa/Minmay again after Hikarus VA died. So we might find out the fate of them but not actually see them. Than again during Zero's production when asked why he didn't use Yoko Kanno again he said he never wanted to use the same composer twice for Macross.... ]

It takes place in the time line after Macross 7 more so than being a direct sequel to it so no you don't have to. Frontier episode 1 contains one homage to Macross 7 in that Sheryl says "Hear my song!" before she sings like the main character of Macross 7.

Nope the ed is going to be

Quote:
"Diamond Crevasse (ダイアモンド クレバス)" by Sheryl Nome starring May’n / May Nakabayashi

May’n / May Nakabayashi is the singing voice behind Sheryl Nome while Aya Endo is the one doing the dialogue. The Kanno composed Do you remember love sung by Megumi Nakajima/Ranka Lee might be a b side perhaps? Though seeing it is a Sherly ending theme Don't Be Late seems to be the more obvious choice.. Guess you have to wait for the OST or more likely the Ranka Lee character cd. The original is a classic and one of the top insert songs ever in anime but I really like the Kanno version of it as well.

Co motherfucking sign. The bridge bunnies btw I think have Tanaka Rie and Aya Hirano doing their voices, someone else too but I need confirmation. I'm expecting character image cds for them for sure!

I fangasmed when I saw those rockets let loose. Still when it comes to the jaw dropping moment nothing compares to the first transformation in Macross Zero!

Btw the first four episode titles got posted on Suki, #4's title should put a smile on the face of Macross fans.

Speaking of bridge bunnies, I saw a guy there with an afro there with an afro..., actually if you look at the characters on the website (http://www.macrossf.com/character/character.html, I guess it's a form of spoilers, though not big) it's somewhat suggestive as to what characters will be major characters, like the purple haired friend of Ranka.

On another note entirely why does Ranka have a uniform with navy insignia on it? Could that be her school uniform? Though we don't actually see her IN the school during the episode (purple haired friend is going home on her own, and has a uniform notably different to the one Ranka was wearing, there could be more than one school on the macross, but...

I didn't even notice that her purple haired friend aka Nanase Matsuura (voiced by Houko Kuwashima which is awesome) went to that school/academy until my latest rewatch of it last week.

As for more than one school, I think so! Frontier is massive.
