On a personal note:.. After meeting the girl dressed as a maid, I don't think she would be working there if she didn't want to. I mean, we're all adults (most of us anyway) and no one makes us do things we don't want to do... right??? Question

Do you really think the school janitor wants to clean up vomit? Do you really think the people who work at Fast Food wanted to work there? I'm a student and all the scholarships go to those who have a low income or have amazing marks. I'm middle class with good marks so I pay for my school by working crappy jobs that I don't want to do. Right now, I work at a factory for the summer and it sucks. You know why I stick with it? Because it will pay for my rent and schooling. I'm thankful I have a family that supports me fiancially, emotionally, etc. but there are people who don't have others to care for them. So, they take the jobs they don't want because they need the money to survive. After all, if the rent is due there isn't time to wait for another job.

But they don't rely on their food to bring in more customers. They rely on degrading women. I don't mind the idea of a restaurant that treats customers as if they are at home, but maid cafés treat their employees as sexual objects.

As much as you have my sympathy (my situation looks OK- a modest food budget and practically no drinking has left me with a few hundred quid left over from my loan for summer DVD purchases), the employees at the Café may not be in the same situation as you.
I assume there are some who do not mind being sexually degraded to the extent of wearing a maid costume, and if Sticks' testimony is correct then it appears such people exist.
If no other financially viable work for the maids exists then I think the problem is not to be found within the Café itself.
That said, the same issues could be raised about the pornography industry.

Well we can do the same with excellent coffee drink mixes served by a good looking barrista. A problem with Maid Cafes in my opinion is getting the right people for a job. I mean, popular girls generally prefer to work in retail, a well known restaurant chain or heck a bank over being at a cafe that caters to some random fetish they dont know about. French Maids is a very foreign idea to the people you wanna hire essentially.

Some would argue that a lot of jobs are like that. Many people would love to sit around all day and not go to work, but they have to, because they have to pay their rent, mortgage, etc. There are many people who love their jobs, but many more who don't.

Before I left for college, I chose to work at McDonalds. I had a lot of friends who worked there, and it was fun for me. I think working in fast food/retail is a good experience, because it teaches you not to be a dick to those in the service industry.

My point is, you can't assume that all the girls at maid cafes are forced into it. I'm all about women's rights and progressive thinking, but if I was looking for a summer job, I'd totally work in a maid cafe. I like cosplaying, and I think those outfits are really cute. Plus, I think it'd be fun.

To focus on the one-sided, straight forward point of view that when a girl wears this costume in this place and saying that it can mean only one thing, can be a harsh perspective.

As I said before, I had a chance to speak at length with this young lady, as did many others, and in the time I was around and from what she told us, she was having a great time meeting people and no one in anyway treated her with disrespect or with any kind of negative remarks as to what she "supposedly" represents.

From a perverted perspective, those who wish to come to this or any maid cafe with the notion to just "look at the pretty maid" is just plain sad. There's more to the Cafe (I call it a Gallery) then one, two or three asian girls dressed in costumes. These kind of people could get alot more "excitment" by going to Hooters or to a nightclub where the waitresses wears a very short skirt.

I'm sure that maid cafes in Japan are very popular for this reason and why there seems to be no end to them. But the one here in L.A. is not crawling with 20 or 30 maids trying to sell their image just to be some anime nerds "wet dream". I'm sorry to say that there are some people who would try to go this cafe just for that reason, but that is not "HER" fault. To suggest that she could be trying to draw in those kind of one-sided people "on purpose" is a insult to her and to open-minded people who don't see her as such.

Again, as I said before, when I spoke to her, i got the impression that if she felt any kind of negative feedback or felt ashamed of what she was doing, she didn't have to be there no matter how much the job pays. Even if we here are going through a resession, no job is worth keeping if you feel awkward.

Besides, she was a great hostess who made myself and others feel at home, and there was alot more to see throughout the place then to just stand there and "stare at the pretty maid" all day. I myself plan to return soon to try the food as soon as the kitchen is up and running. And I have been recommending the place to people I know on and offline, and believe it or not, some of them are women who don't see these young ladies as a "suggestively preverted stereotype to some closed-minded persons who focus on only one thing rather the looking at the whole picture" (and that quote came from a woman I know).

One more thing, I don't appreciate my words twisted around or looked between the lines just to justify your negative or one-sided perspective. If you've read my other messages, you'll see that I spoke about many things about the cafe (gallery) and not ONLY about the girls. Until you've actually meet them as I have, I believe you wouldn't be quick to judge their intentions. To them, it's a job, then they go home afterward, just like you and me. Even though I do agree with you in part about women degrading themselves, there are far worst ways that a person (woman or man) would do or have done that deserve that observation.

I mean lets face it (and I say this with NO INTENTION to offend anyone who might be reading this), not all guys read Playboy for the articles.

Thank you for your open-minded response, that is worthy of respect Wink .

Went to check this place out. They were supposed to open at 10am, but they finally unlocked the front door at almost 20 after. Loads of people working there standing about. the staff talks about each other as if your invisible. Got a free coffee, but I wanted tea (royal t) doesn't serve tea?!
Asked about the menu and a girl at the bar told me she was writing as we speak. Kinda odd, shouldn't the chef do that?! lots of weirdness and unprofessionalism, the longer your there, the more you dont like it

I've gone there several times. On previous occasions, the kitchen wasn't open yet - as art gallery owners they had no concept of what it takes to get anything with a kitchen open and inspected. There was one maid, Mayumi, whom others have remarked on. The owner tells me she takes the bus 45 minutes from K-town to be able to work there, and is having the time of her life. She loves her job, really enjoys the cosplay aspect, and, I must say, is the living embodiment of moe, for better or worse. I can't imagine anyone who's ever actually met her disliking her.

I also found that, since I'm studying Japanese, this cafe is a wonderful place to study. If you get stuck, just ask the maid!

This past Saturday I went back, knowing that they finally completed a successful health inspection a couple of weeks back. They were in full swing. The place is a smashing success. Rich art collector types were wandering in and out in bunches the whole time I was there, and they're not even having a specific event till June 11 or so. The owner was schmoozing up a storm. The cafe was crowded; there were almost no empty tables, and the one maid has now expanded to about six. The staff was stuck firmly in idle while waiting for the inspection. That's now changed. They've worked out most of the kinks, and service was fast, efficient, and with good food. Not that that's why you go to a maid cafe in the first place, but it doesn't hurt. You can still ask the maid if you get stuck on Japanese, of course.

The acid test comes next month, when 30,000 cosplaying animaniacs descend on AX about eight miles away. The owner tells me that AX came down recently to shoot some footage for a film loop they'll be running of "Things To Do In L.A.," so it seems likely that Royal-T will be something of a madhouse.

Finally, the atmosphere - it's welcoming, friendly and low-key. It's about the art and culture, not exploitation. This is a distorted mirror reflecting a culture which itself holds up a distorted mirror to our own. This place is just fascinating.

I'm glad to hear that the cafe is finally in full operation now, I can't wait to go back Wink . I took my fiancee a few weeks ago when it was still in limbo, but even she had a great time. now I can see how it really works. Maybe I can go this or next weekend.

And thanks for the maids name, "Mayumi" told it to me but I forgot. I'm so bad with names..... Wink .
