To tell the truth, I really don't care what they'd call Mew Mew, as it doesn't look that much different from all the other current anime about girls fighting aliens and becoming idol singers, except they have a furry fetish. But I think that, whatever they did with it, 4Kids should be commended for trying to get
more girls into anime, just like Tokyopop's been able to get more girls into manga. I mean, yeah, it sucks if both companies have to occasionally edit fan-favorites, but they're creating markets for other companies who in turn make it possible for 4Kids and Tokyopop to release the original versions of those series. Just like the much-maligned Streamline was doing up until the mid 90's.

I've said this before, but if Saban or DIC had the rights to these shows, they'd air them at times when you couldn't watch them, or even record them. And if you want to complain about Americanizing, how about when Saban hired white actors to replace the Japanese ones in their sentai and tokusatsu shows?! At least 4kids kept the Japanese actors for Ultraman Tiga. Anyway, if it wasn't for 4Kids, Pokemon would be just another anime series you'd have to wake up at 4 A.M. to see, and most people would still label anime as porn. So I consider those edits minor inconveniences for the bigger picture.

Cookie: I think the Pokemon BGM thing was just laziness on the part of Disney, who probably thought the franchise was dead anyway.

I know at least one person who still does. If they don't think of it as porn, then they probably now think of it as stupid kiddie shows. Don't ya just love the thought processes of the average human being?

Anyway, I'm all for shoujo anime over here, despite the fact that I may only be able to handle about 5-10 minutes of it at a time when it's distributed here. I just hope that any tampering is for the normal reasons (translation issues, BS&P, oddball names, etc) and it doesn't turn into another Sakura-esque debacle.

Probably the hot button issue that everyone will talk about once TMM is realeased is the probable Americanization of the music, considering that this is about furry idol singers. (Hey, maybe we can get a celeb voice-over or two.....Doubt it)

FWIW, since we're talking of the changing perception of kids anime, though:
Check out the latest Pokemon movie (Jirachi Wishmaker). The BGM throughout it was the original Japanese BGM ... EXCEPT for the movie ending theme. Instead, was a mix of the ending theme, with English and Japanese vocals.

.. I dunno. Every time a new Pokemon movie is released, -something- changes from what I'd expect. Smile

Whoa. You mean 4kids acctually aknowledged that Pokémon is japanese, and that Jirachi is not a real english word?!

For 4kids to acctually play the original track music of anything, is quite amazing, and it's even more zany if it's japanese vocals. =O

Amazing. =P

Yes, they did. Back in 1998 when they first brought Pokemon over to the US. They acknowledged that in the first movie commentary in 1999. They included trailers (in raw Japanese) for the upcoming movies in Japan, as well. No, there was no "hiding" that Pokemon was Japanese, nor was there any grand conspiracy to do so.

Heck, they even acknowledged anime in general during the director's commentary of the 4th movie.

What I was attempting to point out is that each film theoretically is catering to the same audience (probably males, 6-15 or so), but over time HOW the movie is presented changes slightly, possibly indicating a shift in how fans perceive these shows.

Specifically, for Pokemon 6, the ending theme is sung in English, then Japanese, and then an English/Japanese duet.

Unless I'm horribly mistaken, the original Japanese ending theme was purely in Japanese, which means someone went to the effort of creating a new mix of the song in both English and Japanese.. and behind that creation was a decision based on either market trends, perhaps suggesting that a E/J ending theme would be "cool".. and more importantly, that the kids would possibly enjoy the theme MORE because of the Japanese lyrics, rather than (historically) being turned away by them.

My opinion is that it's an attempt to appeal to a shift in the younger market, a shift that's making them more open to international music (or, perhaps specifically towards Japanese music), and that's what I find very interesting.

I'm soooooo glad Tokyo Mew Mew stays in Tokyo! I was so excited when I found out, that I rushed to update my website, then I was sooo happy to tell everyone, that I started dancing around like an idiot, yelling "Now I only hate 4ke half as much as I did before!"

I'm acting weird again aren't I? Heh heh.

Look, just because they left the original name does not mean it will be a good dub. Yu-gi-oh had its original title but was changed a lot. So was Escaflowne and Cardcaptor Sakura.

Wait...since when is TMM about idol singers? Unless the anime is considerably different from the manga, the girls work in a café.....

Ya, really? What is all this you guys are talking about idol singers? Even in the anime they work in the cafe. Zakuro IS an idol, and she does sing a lot of the japanese background music, but besides that, there is no mentioning of idol singers. Even though i am so happy that tokyo mew mew is staying in tokyo, i still think they are going to ruin it. Man, why can't we EVER get a good dubbed release?.... i'm starting to hate all dubbed anime and just watching it in japanese... with subtitles.

Is it just me, or is 4Kids just asking to be villified by Anime fans for years to come?

Why are they changing it though? Do they want the title to be more appealing? Or is it just about the word "Tokyo." If they kept the original title I'm sure the same ammount of people would watch it.

It's just you.

Whatever reasons they may have for changing the title,I doubt they'll change the plot.
