Ooooo, I like this. Keeping track of new manga and what's interesting has been a lot harder for me than anime. This might actually be useful for me.

If you're the kind of reviewer who gives the first volume of gabriel dropout the same score as the entirety of akira (+artbook,+presentation box) you probably aren't the reviewer for me.

Fair enough, though we were mostly talking about just that first manga volume. The entire set is a thing of beauty.

Devilman is one of those old franchises that seems like it has all the right parts to be a bigger deal in the West and always had a very devoted following who could see it - reminds me a bit of Jojo's Bizarre Adventure in that sense. And here we're finally getting the original manga soon and a new anime adaptation on Netflix of all places. G seemed like a consolation prize when it was announced before the original - I had assumed in lieu of the original - and now here we are with a little of everything. Interesting times.

The Akira box set is a thing of beauty, but it is worth noting that it seems to be prone to shipping damage. Mine was mysteriously delayed from Amazon, and I found out later people were confirming theirs were delayed or refunded due to the boxes getting destroyed in shipping. One I got still has some small, fortunately ignorable impacts on the top. Something to consider when deciding where to purchase it from (I know Amazon would take it back if I tried).

I was wondering if you would continue the manga reviews this season, as there are a lot of new releases recently. Nice to see manga getting some love on ANN!

To Love Ru is pretty tame in comparison to To Love Darkness which got reviewed by The Tokyo Metropolitan Assembly as to wther it violated the Tokyo Metropolitan Ordinance Regarding the Healthy Development of Youths. After a parent called in to complain about it after they found it in their son's room.

The title was not however found to be in violation of the ordinance though. Vol. 1 of To Love Ru Darkness comes out the 5th of December in The States so that should be interesting to see reviewed .

As far as art I've always liked Kentaro Yabuki's art back from his previous work on Black Cat. Though there is a lot of Fan Service in To Love Ru it's never really bothered me that much. Partially because there is so much of it and I kind of became desensitized to it and I honestly tend not to notice it since I legitimately read it for the plot.

I really enjoyed this. The multiple viewpoints are very helpful. I hope this is able to pick up the majority of volume one issues going forward.

The good news is that if you enjoy Fairy Tail you will most likely love Fairy Tail S.

Personally, I enjoy Fairy Tail in spite of all of the things that Fairy Tail S represents.

That being said, it feels kind of disingenuous to evaluate Fairy Tail S as some kind of "new title", and can't say I fully understand why it was included in the Fall 2017 Manga Guide.

This type of feature is a very neat and useful idea for ANN and I hope that you guys can make this a regular thing in the future.

Regarding the To-Love Ru manga reviews and I apologize in advance for my upcoming long post as this franchise was my first real exposure to anime and manga and I have plenty of thoughts on it.

Lynzee: Great review and I enjoyed reading it. It knows plain and simple what it is trying to be and what its’ goals are and it succeeds very well at both.

Amy: Darkness isn’t a spin-off, but a sequel. Besides that, it’s a harem manga, so I don’t see the problem in having a lot of love interests here, especially when they are all charming in their own way. I still liked read your reading your review though.

Rebecca: While the plot may seem a bit stale (at least at first), the characters for me more than make up for it with their earnest charm. I also don’t really necessarily read it for the plot anyway, so maybe that’s why I don’t feel the same as you on this. Darkness definitely has a lot more plot going on than here though. Plot that I find rather interesting. (I’m talking about both kinds, mind you). Still liked reading your thoughts on it.

Austin: Haters gonna hate. Especially when they think Kentaro Yabuki’s art is bland.

It also saddens me how the first season’s anime just pales in comparison to the original manga. After rewatching it a few years back and making comparisons with the manga, I became very grateful for Xebec adapting it properly with the second season onwards, but man, that first season is without a doubt the worst season of the To-Love Ru anime. I still sometimes wonder to this day why Xebec couldn’t just adapt this series properly from the beginning.

@ Parsifal24 - Regarding your last two sentences, I feel exactly the same way with the fan service. When I first started watching the series and looked up what other people thought of it at the time, all I found was people commenting on was the fan service and hardly anything else. I knew that it was well-done, but I felt like I was the only one noticing the actual plot over the fan service. Thankfully, I would discover later on that people like you exist in that they watch it for the story and actually become desensitized towards the fan service. For me, I became desensitized to it by the time of my 3rd rewatch of the anime. I felt glad that I wasn’t alone on that front. Fan service in To-Love Ru is as certain to happen as a bear taking a dump in the woods and it’s one of the things I will remember fondly of the franchise, but certainly not the only thing.

Indeed. If you add some sex scenes, then it is essentially hard core XXX. Another notable manga on that level of randiness is "Seikon no Qwaser".

Glad to see such high praise for To Your Eternity if nothing else it shows the versatility Yoshitoki Ooima as a writer and much more detailed art style. While also being able to show and make the audience feel empathy without emotionally manipulating the audience. While I really have no opinion on Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty having not read any of it although it is only six volumes so it's not much of a commitment.

I just hope it doesn't end up like The Prince in His Dark Days in that after the first volume the audience wanted it to be one thing and the author had other ideas about what they wanted it to be about. Children of the Whales could be good I haven't read it or seen any of the Anime adaptation I have some hope for it though.

Glad to see this is back, even if I don't agree with some of the reviews. It's always good to have more manga coverage on here.
Two things, though:
1. I don't think that continuations like that Re:Zero manga really need to be here, seeing as only people who've read the previous arc/series are going to read it. I don't think manga in box sets like Akira need to be included either, because it's not like you can buy a box set in installments. It'd be better for there to just be a single review for the whole thing.
2. Will any digital-only titles be featured here? I kind of doubt any will be, but it'd be nice to have reviews for some of Yen Press' or Kodansha's digital titles, since there aren't a lot of reviews out there for them.

There are a couple of digital-only titles being covered this time, like we did last time we ran this feature. Sometimes it comes down to what we can get for review copies.

Joshua Zarate, I can see where not necessarily reading To-Love-Ru for the plot may make it more fun. Very Happy As much as boobs don't do it for me, I do really like Kentaro Yabuki's art, so I am planning to give this series another few omnibuses.
