The tone shift didn't work for me at all, I would really have liked the show if it had continued in the vein of ep 1-3, but after that it just kept jumping the shark over and over again.

Drama only work for me if I find the character believable, otherwise I don't see them as human and just can't bring myself to care about what happen to obviously 2d character. At most, if they're really are terrible people, I just root for them to self destroy and the inevitable redemption arc just kill it for me.

Talk of mums & melodrama is giving me flashbacks to Your Lie in April, which went from "girl inspires boy who can't play piano coz it reminds him of his dead mom" to spoiler["girl inspires boy who can't play piano coz it reminds him of his dead mom who violently abused him so she could make him into the pianist she wanted to be before she got [disease] & also the girl has [disease] & also violently abuses him but it's funny when she does it."]

The whole over the top melodrama was what made the show work for me to begin with.
I am not exactly a fan of sports shows because I usally can´t gain acess to the character drama or flat out not take it seriously, so Hanebado throwing any pretense of seriousness or believabilty out of the window from the get go actually made this much more accessible and enjoyable. And also the mood whiplash and tonal shifts don´t hit me that hard, altough it could definetly cut down on the cheap fanservice.
And yes I do hope the show won´t start trying to be reasonable anytime soon Very Happy
Thus I´m actually enjoying this so far, which is really rare for a sports anime. Still not exactly show of the season material obviously but fun enough,

I've seen lots of people commenting there was a switch from the first episodes to now, but I think the levels of drama were always the same? Nagisa' struggle may have been more down to earth in concept but she still spent six months treating her team like shit because she lost a match once, not to mention her reaction when she saw Ayano again.

I'm torn in Ayano's plot because it can be done well in spite of the melodrama but I'm not sure of what they are trying to do. She was heavily pressured into playing badminton again, which has screwed her up more than she already was, and that's never acknowledged by the other characters or the narrative and so far almost nobody in the team seem to give a shit about her shift in behaviour, even the ones who know her backstory.

There is nothing unbelievable or over the top with depictions of parents disowning their kids or with holding their love, because their kids did something or didn't do something. Some parents even go full dark side too. That is real life.

Not saying the overall tone of the series is not overly extreme, but that the parental issue is not far fetched.

I also don't think there's been much of a tonal shift, outside of specific moments; the big difference has just been the stakes in the show, which, as mentioned in the column, flip from fairly realistic to ridiculously extreme (Nagisa to Ayano, respectively). I dig the show anyway, if only for the great animation and terrific editing; but I do wonder if I should brace for the show to crash & burn in its narrative when the "bad mom" plot reaches its peak. Seriously, how are they going to resolve that??

The quality is wonderful and I am not too bothered with the drama. This is an amazing sports anime showing badminton girls and their matches in great detail like sweat, muscles, and reactions. My only complaint about this whole series is the existence of that annoying male coach and those supporting guys. They are an eyesore to a great series about girls and badminton.

What's wrong with the guys? The coach's "accidental pervert" gag seems to have been dropped, and the two boys offer nice tidbits of extra perspective on the story. They might not be integral characters to the show, but I wouldn't call them an eyesore.

I fully agree on the animation quality, however; that's why the show fell on my radar in the first place, and I haven't been disappointed yet.

^For what it’s worth, just so that you can know ahead of time, the person you’re asking that question to is notorious for hating males. I mean he actively despises them no matter what they do. If those characters’ sex were female and nothing else about them were changed, he would praise them instead of condemning them.

^Joshua, I am aware that I can be immature a lot with regards to seeing boys in some CGDCT series. It seems that you can be that too when you are willing to go off-topic just to attack me for complaining about what I do not like. Are you even aware that you are doing this every time? I do not like having important guys in my CGDCT anime. There you go.

Hanebado is definitely an amazing sports series and it is one of the best ones in recent years. The beautiful character design, the attention to detail for the emotions of the characters, and the well-animated matches. What I hate about it is that it has the stereotypical "girls being aided by a guy" cliche. You know, the kind of stuff that you see in countless idol/harem/mobage series. I find the coach man and the two boys to be more irritating than the drama that is actually good. I would be happy if this had a female coach instead. Not because that the coach is a girl too, but because it has done something what those series in Japan do not have the shuttlecocks to do: giving a group of girls a female mentor.

I wish Harukana Receive has the same high quality as Hanebado instead of having another generic moe quality. Although I still prefer the former over the latter because Harukana has the relaxing atmosphere and does not have Hanebado's flaws like boys and drama.

^John, I’m sorry to hear you feel that way. I’m not attacking you for complaining about what you do not like. I was just trying to point out that your criticisms on these matters seem very quick to anger and it looked like you went out of your way to not give those characters a chance. I’m not making something out of thin air, that is legitimately what I got out of the tone of your posts. If that’s not the message you wanted to express, I apologize for my behavior and I take back what I said. What I forgot to mention in my previous post is that I don’t feel like that this show is supposed to be a CGDCT anime at all since everything is being executed very seriously and not light-hearted as the sub-genre would imply. I don’t see how that just because the girls may look cute means it must by all means adhere to the sub-genre’s tendencies. Because of that, I really don’t see how the boys currently in the roles that they fill could be anything, but beneficial and not irritable.

^Thank you for your understanding. I am sorry for being like this but do not be surprised if I go off again. I do not like these works' fascination of girls always being mentored by a guy who can be a love interest. It is so overrated and stereotypical that it is not worth judging them regardless of what they do. It is the one thing that I hate about Uma Musume. The coach man is like the average lone pretty boy of the show and the two male students do not do anything worthwhile at all. If Hanebado were about male and female players from the start, that would have been appreciated. Also, I am not saying that Hanebado is a CGDCT anime. I am enjoying the show, I just wish that it could have been all about girls and sports with serious plot and less cutesy art like Keijo.
