Martinet first voiced the role of Mario in the CD-ROM game Mario Teaches Typing in 1992

From listening to the samples in such a game, it appears that Martinet had yet to adopt Mario's characteristic register. Perhaps realising that Mario is canonically tiny led to the later shift in pitch.

I remember hearing that Martinet was asked to make Mario's voice softer and higher to give him more family appeal. For example, imagine SM64 with deep voiced, raspy Italian man grunts instead of whimsical "Woohoo!" noises.

I met him in October at a comic con. He’s really chill and down-to-earth, overall a really nice guy. Congrats, Mr. Martinet!

Major congrats to Charles Martinet for voicing not only Mario but all the mustaches in the long running series. It takes true dedication to stick with voicing the same character(s) in so many entries.
