As a long time Sailor Moon fan, the live action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon has always been one of my top favorite versions of the series. I loved Akira Kubodera's performance as Kunzite and it was such a unique and complex take on the classic Sailor Moon villain. It's really sad to hear he passed away and at such a young age as well. There were so many Sailor Moon fans around the world who loved his acting and character and he'll be sorely missed by the fandom. My heart goes out to his family and loved ones.

Woah, is it just me or has there been an abnormally large amount of celebrity suicides recently?

I'm sorry to the family. I hope he is a better place.

I've noticed and many Japanese people have too. However, it is a taboo topic to talk about mental health. It's so taboo that a couple of JPN artists I follow on twitter have talked about their thoughts about how Japan treats mental health in ENGLISH just so they won't get backlash from other Japanese users. To me, that says a lot.

Kubodera also played Akira Kubodera in Musical Hakuōki: Shinsengumi Kitan.

Correction: do you mean "Kamo Serizawa"?

Thanks for pointing that out. We made the correction.

Was his suicide possible COVID related (financially, psychologically or healthwise)?

No, there has been far more than usual. In fact there has been a spike in suicides in the general population in Japan with a very large spike in the number of women taking their own lives, which is also quite unusual. I don't think you can entirely blame it on economic struggles related to COVID-19 either.
