More like "Marvel likes to hire manga authors to promote their movies". Artists simply do what they are being paid for.
Sometimes Marvel does the same- they published comic books on Attack on Titan + comic book artist Stegman did My Hero Academia variant cover alongside somebody else.

Knowing Mashima, he was probably thinking of doing it before he was offered the money. Heck, he'd take his whole team to go see it and it'd fit nicely into their work schedule.

I like Boichi's "edge" though he might have just been assigned that profile as these three renditions follow the story concept of different versions of Dr. Strange...

Haha, you might be right. I do feel like he hasn't slept since his Rave Master run. Hiro Mashima is one of the few mangaka that does multiple serializations simultaneously this often afaik.

Okay then. Why wasn't this particular factoid disclosed in the original article?

You would think it would help set the record straight into the true intentions of each of the mangaka and lessen the prospect that those who have read the original story would believe the mangakas did the work out of personal fandom!

The article's first sentence, emphasis added, wrote:
Manga artists Hiro Mashima (Fairy Tail, EDENS ZERO), Boichi (Dr. Stone), and Chūya Koyama(Space Brothers) illustrated a promotional poster for Marvel Studios' Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film.

Not so fast! Let's look at what the definition of a promotion is:

Merriam-Webster wrote:
Definition of promotion

Noun

1: the act or fact of being raised in position or rank : PREFERMENT
2: the act of furthering the growth or development of something
especially : the furtherance of the acceptance and sale of merchandise through advertising, publicity, or discounting
So while promotion is usually associated with paid commercial ventures, it's not mutually exclusive to those ventures being specifically paid. Emphasis mine!

It is still about personal fandom somewhat - after all, why would Marvel hire someone who's not a fan? (A fan would understand the character better)

They likely sent some feelers out, then asked if he/she would be willing to do a collab for pay
