See anything that makes it in the top 10 poll pretty much will get an anime adaption at some point. This is last years but case in point, anything that makes it in that list will get a greater amount of support from the higher ups.

I mean... that's pretty much logical? Like there's no way production execs would throw money at some random titles? They would need to know which ones are popular, and the most common parameters of popularity are sales numbers and poll results.

In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same execs who commissioned these polls. The event is not named AnimeJapan for nothing.

Is the big secret that he crossdresses? Or is secretly a girl? That's the sense I'm getting.

Though seems like the main thrust is the love triangle between the girl, Senpai, and the best friend.

The secret is that he's a crossdresser, the manga is about his struggle with gender expression
