Gonna be a bit more of a crapshoot deciding which DVDs to buy. Previewing the actual dub or subtitles is more helpful than most reviews. Oh well. At least the mag will be cheaper.

ETA: Not sure if the virtual DVD will work outside the U.S. and Canada, given how licensing for streaming anime videos is like.

The lack of a physical DVD reduces the probability of me buying the magazine. I've mainly bought Otaku for the previews on the DVD.

With Newtype, the content wasn't so great so I really just wanted the DVD.

With Otaku USA, the content is the star and the DVD was just icing. I wont miss the DVD. I'm there for the mag.

To me, at least, this is encouraging. I subscribed to NewType USA for years (until its untimely demise) but hardly ever watched the preview discs. I was much more interested in articles about what was currently airing in Japan (not to mention the big glossy pictures). So I sort of shied away from another magazine where I was paying for a disc I wouldn't watch, especially since that plastic bag kept me from browsing to see if the printed content alone was worth the $10. With this extra cost removed though, it looks much more enticing (especially having read Viga_of_stars comments above me, that "content is the star"). I'll have to pick up the January (or, since it's bimonthly, would it be February?) issue whenever it comes out.

Well, I'm getting my copy at my LCS this week, so it should be out soon, it might already be in bookstores. One thing that's nice is that they really dropped the price, which Newtype didn't do when they dumped the DVD. I have to say that I never looked at the DVD, and I won't miss it.

If DVD-type content appears on the magazine's website instead of a physical disc, it's win-win. They save on production expenses, and the customer gets the product cheaper, and can still view the preview materials online. Otaku USA is pretty fun reading.

There are lots of trailers up on ANN now, and episodes if not whole series are streaming for free more and more often these days (you can see at least the first couple of episodes of most FUNimation series on their site and other places, there's ADV stuff on their anime network and Crunchy Roll etc.

Not in the U.S., so most of the full-episode streaming sites won't work for me. I never ever buy anything based on a trailer; much less reliable than a good review.

Funimation's site is good, though I wouldn't buy any of their stuff based on hearing the dub, except FMA. Basically if I already watched the show in Tagalog and liked it, I'll probably get the DVDs so I can watch it subtitled, so School Rumble and Suzuka are in.
