Seriously, it looks amazing, I don't know if $10,00 amazing but amazing. But I have seen paintings and sculptures go for way more, so I guess it is in the eye of the beholder. |

That is one spiffy looking Gundam model; all the little details are stunning! I'm not sure I'd pay nearly $10,000 for it, though.

I don't build models so this may be a silly question but, do you paint the pieces before putting them together? Or do you paint the completed model?

...but seriously, the small parts that were added/modded/customized really add to the 'awesome' factor of the whole thing!  (Like the little pieces inside the ankle-skirt-thingies. No one is gonna see that unless they've positioned the Gunpla upside-down.)

I'm no expert either but surely you paint the pieces individually so that the wrong colour paint does not end up on the wrong part. It also means that you can properly paint all those other otherwise-impossible-to-get nooks and crannies. Oh, and I'd imagine that drying times are reduced and it is much easier to get an even coat by painting individually. Yeah, I can't really see any professional painting the model whilst it is assembled. |

Really, the only reasons one would "paint the completed model" would be either to apply topcoat or to add effects to it. |

You paint the pieces before putting it together. But people who are super hardcore into modeling do a lot more. They'll sand down the edges where the snaps were attached, use putty to fill in any imperfections, add in crazy details, etc. You paint the insides of the pieces, too, so that if anything shows in the final model, it looks like a believable machine color, and not plastic. I can't get over how clean this guy's lines are.  Even with a paint marker, all my models looked like a toddler scrawled all over them.
