For some reason I read the headline and thought the author of Gintama would ride in a horse race before retiring.

Though I don't read Gintama, I thought the same thing. That's a beautiful horse.

On another note, is "Just A Way" a somewhat meaningful name for a horse or is it just another Attack on Engrish mishappening?

It's a reference to an item in "Gintama."

The name Just A way comes from Jasterway, the best toy in the universe that is totally not an explosive made for a terrorist plot.

While I don't know what kind of Attack on Engrish you might be thinking of, racehorses having weird names like this is something I've seen before.

After this success Yamatoya should write the screenplay for the original anime about horse racing, based on personal experience.

By the way, is not the only Yamatoya racing horse named after Gintama, there is three: Just A Way, Otsuu and Pandemonium.

I meant the typical Japanese attempt at cool sounding English that doesn't make any sense, but my question was basically if it's common for horses to have those sort of bizarre names

Yeah, the name is "Justaway"... Never seen it spelled like "Just a Way"
But to each their own. Not sure what Viz spelled it as.

That's the name of horse as the official prints in English spelled it. The original Gintama item is spelled as Justaway, in one word.

Yes, race horses are not allowed to have an official name that's already is use, or restricted names that have been retired. The names have to be approved by the Jockey Club and have a huge list of restrictions on them. That results in a lot of really weird names.
