After 4 episodes i had no idea what was going on. So I dropped it. It looked pretty. That's about it.

I was enjoying the hell out of Gundam Build Fighters. It was way more enjoyable then Gundam Reconguista.

I was already debating whether I should watch G-Reco or not. Thanks to this article, Im still debating. If only it werent after UC, this decision would be easy. I most likely will watch it in the end.

I thought G-Reco was awful and lacking in far too many of the things that make gundam 'gundam,' but I have to respect that even he admits that it was bad and apologizes. He does seem to really recognize the problems, and it does indeed pick up after 19 or so. However, that was far too late to save anything.

That said, I don't really get the 'not understandable' argument. It was so incredibly simplistic that I don't get how you could really fail to understand it. Zeta for example had significantly more going on and I don't think I've heard a similar complaint there. Are the people who are saying they couldn't understand it just lost because they are sitting there waiting for things to have depth?

Also have to say he is probably right about his staff. It is a shame they couldn't have done a better series.

I can understand Tomino's desire to keep the animation team together and working, it is truly a waste to have their talents be left to fade. But, I don't think having the series ball up like it did helped those people.

It's good for him to take responsibility, but it is really sad still that he has to.

I haven't finished G Reco yet, but to me it's pretty much common sense that Tomino shows often have problems with their story. Even my favorite works of his like Zeta and Xabungle have their story-related potholes, and they only increase with things like ZZ and Ideon. I expected G Reco to be a return to form for Tomino, and I think he fulfilled that potential, just in both the good and bad ways.

It feels weird to see a director openly criticize his own work though, especially so soon after it has finished. I don't know if it being an original concept gave him more freedom to critique in the open, if he saw its reception and just tried to save face, or he's just being regular outspoken Tomino here.

From what I've seen of it, G Reco wasn't all failure though. The artistry and designs in the episodes I have seen were off the chart awesome, and finally seeing 2D mechs again brought a huge smile to my face. I found the setting and technology fascinating, and while I often was confused as to what exactly was going on, I always wanted to see more. I just put it on hold because I couldn't keep track of/remember what had happened from week to week and thought it'd be better suited for a marathon. It has its fair share of problems, but I'd still rather see more G Recos than just play it safe artistically dull adaptations every season. There's room for both!

I stalled on the series after episode 14, and I haven't brought myself to watch the rest of it. I was seriously considering dropping it, which would be unfortunate because I've never dropped an anime before, but it was just really bad.... I still plan on finishing it some day, but it might be awhile.

Haven't seen it yet, but I must ask, is it an even bigger trainwreck than Eureka Seven AO? (the other mech anime that bombed bad in recent memory)

It took him this long to realize the story was garbage, just watching 3-6 episodes can give you a clue how terrible this anime was in the terms of story also the mecha design is bad too.

Seemed all right to me. Certainly better than any AUs since Turn A and much better than the Gundam: Skylanders series that's about children playing a game. I prefer my Gundam shows to be about actual pilots.

Everything by Tomino has had story problems, problems which he's never really rectified. At the very least it's nowhere near as bad as Gundam AGE, the series that got the franchise kicked off the Tokyo Broadcasting System.

Gundam has been pretty weak for the last few "proper" installments; SEED Destiny was a complete mess (though admittedly because of circumstances beyond the creators' control. Mostly), 00 fell apart in its second season, AGE needs no explanation, and now Reconguista is also a mess. Though while those faltered, the Gundam Build Fighters series of all things has been incredibly well-received. I think SUNRISE and Bandai really need to think about what to do next with the franchise properly because this has not been a good set of shows for the past decade.

^This really. I've been slowly getting through Reco in G, and I can see hints of Tomino's intentions, but the pacing is incredibly slow, a lot of the characters epitomize his tendency to simply spew out exposition without much personality, the politics are kind of unnecessarily convoluted and it just feels somewhat dull. However, I've heard arguments about how it is about Japan's demilitarization policies, the awkwardness of later generations learning about war and being dragged into it, etc. so I think there's a few promising ideas to unearth there perhaps. Still it isn't just Gunpla porn (if anything, almost the opposite with how soft and pared down the designs are) and returns to some of the original intentions of the franchise to begin with which is nice, plus the animation (which I believe is hand drawn again or something?) can look really fantastic at certain points, just wish the line work wasn't so sparse at times. So that's my two cents, maybe it will be another Gundam black sheep that fulfills a certain niche for me, but I guess I'll see, but for now at least I get to look forward to Klim "I'M A GENIUS" Nick.

Gundam The Origin OVA is also doing very well with great reception. Sunrise is leaving so much money on the table by not adapting the main story, which is already miles better then the original MSG plot-wise, character-wise, and worldbuilding-wise.
