Judean Spirit Masks Bear Striking Resemblance to JoJo Artifact

posted on by Lynzee Loveridge

The Stone Mask found in JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a fearsome object. Practically sentient, it will latch on the face of its victims and turn them into vampires. The series long-time antagonist Dio Brando becomes all too interested in the object and sets into motion Hirohiko Araki's long-running manga series.

The ancient stone mask isn't too many steps outside of reality. A series of masks discovered in the Judean deserts are on display at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem and bare a striking similarity to the one found in the Joestar home. The masks date back to the Neolithic Age (the last part of the Stone Age, circa 4,500 to 2,000 BC) and are made of limestone. They're thought to be have been used as part of ancient, religious practices.

Dr. Debby Hershman, curator of prehistoric cultures at the Israel Museum, says she refrains from putting them on her face out of respect.

So far, no Pillar Men have appeared in Israel to reclaim the masks.
