Mamoru Oshii to Receive Annie Awards' Lifetime Achievement Award

The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announced on Monday that director Mamoru Oshii will receive the Winsor McCay Award for lifetime achievemnet at its 44th Annual Annie Awards. The awards ceremony will be held on February 4, 2017.
The award is "given to individuals in recognition of lifetime or career contributions to the art of animation in producing, directing, animating, design, writing, voice acting, sound and sound effects, technical work, music, professional teaching, and for other endeavors which exhibit outstanding contributions to excellence in animation." Previous winners of the award include Kihachiro Kawamoto (1988), Osamu Tezuka (1989-1990), Hayao Miyazaki (1998), Katsuhiro Ōtomo (2014), and Isao Takahata (2016).
Oshii is known for directing numerous animated films, original video anime (OVA), anime television series, and live-action films. His early career included directing the first original video anime, Dallos. He also directed Urusei Yatsura 2: Beautiful Dreamer, Angel's Egg, and several Patlabor projects.
The 1995 science fiction animated feature Ghost in the Shell led him to international critical and commercial success. After the success of Ghost in the Shell, Oshii was involved in various projects such as Jin-Roh - The Wolf Brigade, Blood: The Last Vampire, and The Sky Crawlers.
Oshii has recently worked on live-action works, such as The Last Druid: Garm Wars, the Patlabor: The Next Generation project, and Nowhere Girl. He is directing the hybrid live-action/CG micro-series "Sand Whale and Me" at Production I.G for a March 18 debut on Adult Swim's Toonami block.
