Afro Tanaka Live-Action Series Unveils New Trailer, Visual

posted on by Rafael Antonio Pineda
New series based on Jōkyō Afro Tanaka manga premieres on July 5

The official website for the new live-action television series adaptation of Masaharu Noritsuke's Jōkyō Afro Tanaka (Tokyo-Bound Afro Tanaka) manga began streaming a trailer for the series on May 30. The site also revealed a new visual for the series. (Note: The video in the official website is region-locked to Japan. A region-free version is embedded below.)

Kento Kaku stars in the series as the titular Tanaka. Other cast members include Kaho as Maki, Yukiyoshi Ozawa as Suzuki, Satoru Matsuo as Nishida, and Shunya Shiraishi as Takahashi. Eri Murakawa, Hatsuki Shimizu, Anna Konno, and Eri Watanabe are also part of the cast.

The series will premiere on WOWOW on July 5. Yūsuke Ishida is directing the series, with music by Kōji Nakamura and Tarō Makido.

The manga series centers around the quirky life of an Afro-haired young man named Hiroshi Tanaka. Noritsuke's Afro Tanaka manga series has been running since 2002. The gag manga underwent several title changes as it followed Tanaka through every stage of his life: Kōkō Afro Tanaka (High School Afro Tanaka), Chūtai Afro Tanaka (Dropout Afro Tanaka), Jōkyō Afro Tanaka (Tokyo-Bound Afro Tanaka), Sasurai Afro Tanaka (Wandering Afro Tanaka), and Shiawase Afro Tanaka (Happy Afro Tanaka). The sixth and latest installment is titled Kekkon Afro Tanaka (Marriage Afro Tanaka), and it launched in Shogakukan's Big Comic Spirits magazine in April 2018.

The Jōkyō Afro Tanaka story received a live-action film adaptation in 2012.
