What do they say about Japan again........... Oh yeah:
"Respect other countries' cultures!" This is NZ's culture. Let NZers decide. No meddling furryners! Hey, if we don't like Puritans meddling with Japan, then nobody can meddle with NZ too. |

enurtsol,
Who said anything about meddling? If I think a law in foreign country is stupid, I can (and likely will) say so. That's not meddling; that's stating my opinion. Now, if I actually start trying to form a campaign in that country to get them to change their laws, *that* is meddling. For example: the US pressuring Canada to change its copyright laws, *that* is meddling. So, yeah, I think this NZ law is stupid and pointless. But if the people of New Zealand want to have such a law, that's their business. |

OK then, next time Puritans start complaining about stuff in Japan, nobody should tell them to shut up. |

The accused is not an NZer. They invited furryn criticism when they arrested a furryner. The only thing this case has in common with the Tokyo Youth Ordinance controversy is the charge of obscenity. The details are completely different. |

He committed the act inside NZ jurisdiction, and he's not a diplomat; therefore NZ laws apply. Regardless of his nationality, as a visitor, he has to follow the laws of NZers, whatever the NZers decide.
I wasn't referring about the Tokyo Youth Law, though this applies there too (let the Tokyoites decide). More something like that Usagi Drop streaming discussion. |

Your comment is missing the point entirely. The accused is not part of "NZ culture". Foreigners aren't meddling in NZ's affairs; NZ is meddling in foreigners' affairs, which foreigners have as much of a right to complain about as you do about foreigners meddling in NZ affairs. This is also true of the guy who was arrested entering Canada with anime porn on his laptop earlier this year; but most of these obscenity cases where that argument comes up, whether in Japan or in US states, for the most part are in-state/in-country enforcement. Those cases have different implications than the one we are discussing here. |

A foreigner visiting NZ land, it becomes NZ's affair. Surely we can agree on that. |

As a visitor to NZ, is he subject to NZ laws as a whole? Of course. Are those laws above criticism? Of course not. Your comment was:
Respect for other cultures cuts both ways - to the home country's benefit, but also potentially to its detriment - especially when it comes to obscenity laws. The case invites discussion because NZ wants to impose its "culture" onto this international student's affairs, not the other way around as people have discussed in reference to the Tokyo Youth Ordinance Bill and various obscenity cases in the US. The decision invites discussion and disagreement. |

When I mentioned meddling furryners, I meant us here, not the Chinese visitor. We're the meddling furryners, just us here with the Tokyo Youth Bill not too long ago. And if we could complain about the NZ law and the Tokyo Youth Bill, then we could complain about anything in Japan, including that mentioned Usagi Drop streaming discussion. (Hint: look at that discussion, then look at the post at the top of this page. ) |

Most of us here are voicing our opinion about the article.(Some of the posts here are from people who are New Zealanders.) That's not meddling in another country's affairs. Sure most of us aren't slapping emoticons on all our posts trying to be funny but what we are doing is just talking about a topic and not meddling in it. You know, like how we always talk about Japanese news/interest articles.

You're right: they shouldn't tell them to shut up. OTOH, they should feel free to argue with them if they disagree. Conversations and arguments are one thing, squelching free speech is a very different thing. |

Because I don't want to live in a world where every joke needs an emoticon. |
