I got the first volume for free as a $1 blind box item from RightStuf(they had a coupon) and I gotta say that nothing on the box makes me feel like so much as removing the shrinkwrap.

What annoys me most is when a anime dvd/collection has a fanservice style picture on the front, meaning I can't buy it because everything I buy is under immediate inspection from my entire family . |
Oh, I freaking HATE this.....
I get that the market is trying to say "Sex sells!" because it's the truth but look, sometimes the buyer is one who appreciates other things, you know!?
When the companies don't respect that, it's f*cking EMBARRASSING to buy anime!
It also really pisses me off when the male PROTAGONIST isn't even on the cover of an anime DVD. Ayumu is the best character in Kore Wa Zombie Desuka and he's not even on the f*cking cover of the boxset! What the hell is that!?
When covers feature nothing but scantily clad girl characters, it really feels like the companies are trying to alienate female viewers.
"Go back to your yaoi and soap opera shoujo because that's all female fans are capable of enjoying lulz"
We don't appreciate that message very much. >:I |
I think it would make more people happy if they made the front cover reversable, fanservice on the inside, the other purely aesthetic.

Even worse, none of the scenes depicted in the cover art for the various volumes ever appeared in the anime itself. There's no scenes with Kashiwa-senpai suggestively posing in a leather outfit like that one, or in another case a bikini-clad Misaki straddling a motorcycle. |
Perfect example, thankfully, the art for Welcome to the NHK! is different here in Australia.

That would be very nice. ADV used to do things like that. I think the problem is in the budget, perhaps?

Just about every dvd I have has art on the inside. A lot of which is already reversible.
Just as a side note, I'm currently resisting the urge to reverse my entire collection's covers

Nothing wrong with that. You just need a little time to do it.
(and this is off topic but is your username after the band The Lost Prophets, by any chance? I LOVE them! hehe)

No, not really. It's easy enough to convince other fans of this because they're familiar with anime. They know it's not all porn. They're aware of the business' unfortunate tendency toward playing up fanservice.
But if you show someone not familiar with anime some of those covers you're gonna be met with some pretty harsh skepticism when you try to tell them the show isn't like that.

if they dont believe you after telling them that the cover art is in no way related to the actual content of the show, then that is their problem. you know what it is about, and if they want to assume and make asses of themselves, let them.

Maybe I watched the wrong "Kore wa Zombie Desu Ka" but I remember quite a lot of nudity and fanservice. I don't see how the cover art isn't representative. Same with Welcome to the NHK where sexual frustration is a big theme. It's not like they threw on a fanservicy busty bikini spread on a Hamtaro DVD.

I'm sorry but I find that to be a very presumptuous attitude. It's fine to say that you shouldn't be overly concerned with what others think of you or that you shouldn't care what certain people think. But you know what? I care what my friends and family think of me. And there's nothing at all wrong with that. Even if their opinion is misinformed, these people are important to me so their opinion of me matters as well.

Lmao parents are not the issue. I'm old enough that my parents don't care about what I buy anymore, but it's still embarrassing to be seen in the general public buying DVDs with fanservice covers....when you yourself are a girl.
Any my sympathy goes out to the younger fans whose parents DO still care.
Because......well, that just sucks for them.

o_o I'm only on episode 4 but there has been no direct nudity as of yet and fanservice is limited to vampire ninja's boob-size and panty shots....of a boy in drag.
So either you're thinking of a different series or they turn the fanservice and nudity up to eleven after episode 4. >_>
(that would be disappointing....)

The only remaining anime block on TV having cultists for fans and not airing at a decent hour.
That and the increasing glut of moe shows on the market, ensuring I'll never see Full Metal Panic Season 3.

NHK has no practically no real fanservice beyond its subject matter. There is one brief sequence near the end which features a PG13 sex scene. But anyone buying the show expecting to see images like those portrayed in the cover art will be very disappointed. The dominant story line consists of two young people talking together in a park. I especially take issue with the cover art of Kashiwa-senpai who is fundamentally a very shy and insecure person. It portrays her in a demeaning fashion entirely at odds with the personality of her character.
I suppose the brief glimpses we get of Satou collecting racy photos from the Web might count as fanservice, but most of the depictions of "sexual frustration" are scenes like Satou looking up the skirt of a figurine and the box of tissues next to his computer. There are also extended story arcs about suicide cults and multi-level marketing schemes which have no fanservice components whatsoever.

What block are you talking about? noitaminA? Toonami? [adult swim]? Something else?
You might at least specify the country you are talking about when you write about "the only remaining anime block on TV." Someone reading this in Indonesia, Argentina, or Estonia probably has no idea what you are talking about. I'm not sure I do either.

My bad. The only remaining block in the United States of America, Toonami (Does the CW's Saturday Morning block count though? They have Western cartoons and WWE wrestling so I'm not sure they do).

I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but the excessive fan service into today's generation of anime is deplorable. I mean, I love titties as much as the next guy, but come on. Don't numb me to it.
