Oh I haven't seen anyone mention this yet, but the Blu Ray is up for preorder now:
http://trigger-global.ecq.sc/lwa-bluray01.html About 60 dollars and will be released in September. |

As someone who has contributed to LWA probably more than most here, I can say without a doubt, if I only had $60 to spend, or had to pick one bluray show to buy and only one, I would definitely pick Highschool DxD over LWA too.
I would also pick Highschool DxD over Arve Rizzle, Ryo, Death Billiards, or last year's Anime Mirai shows. Until there is something more substantial it is simply rational to devote more of your focus and time to a developed show than a random short. However even if I did pick DxD, that would not I mean I thought that LWA is bad or didn't like it. I reject such idiotic mutually exclusive thinking. But I dispute the claim that "LWA is popular everywhere". No, it's not. There are only 7,938 backers. That's hardly "everywhere", nor that many people overall. If it's that popular, how many were even aware of this now-cancelled event? |

Please list 5 yuri shows from the past year. I mean, clearly there must be tons of them if Japanese viewers really like it and it's a major factor in success or failure.
That poll allowed users to to add their own options, which they didn't realize when they made it. Pretty sure that was not one they put there themselves. |

If I had to make a wildly subjective assertion positing the reasons why LWA doesn't seem to hold the level of popularity and acclaim to other, more violent or 'prurient' films, are Yoshinari's directoral and artistic choices.
All of my classmates (Sheridan animation students-- it's among the top schools for the craft) immediately see a western, almost Warner Bros. influence in the animation. The takes are very broad, there is a distinct, cartoon sensibility to the squash and stretch. The character designs reflect western ideas about contrast and have a relative simplicity akin to Ghibli or Disney characters (compared to most anime, you can look at the main cast and divulge their personalities, without them having spoken a single word-- it's a rare artistic conceit for Japanese character design). The action consists of a mix of harmless physical comedy and bloodless violence. In so many words, Yoshinari infused a lot of his own passions for western cartoons into LWA. All of the classmates I introduced it to, have a specific appreciation for it relative to Anime Mirai projects and most modern anime in general. My guess is that this western influence isn't as interesting to the average Japanese anime fan, or anime otaku. It sounds rather condescending, but maybe it is the case that hiking up Akko's skirt, giving Lotte some oppai and Sucy a yuri inclination, vivisecting the dragon into a visceral mist of draconic giblets, and unwinding at the arcane onsen--- all these things might have done the trick to raise ticket sales. I don't think that's necessarily true, at least in the ecchi department, given Madoka's success. |

Yeah, I think its the fact it looks more like an American cartoon than an anime is what turns me off as well. I've never been interested in American animation, only Japanese animation, so seeing an anime trying to emulate an American cartoon is kind of offputting. If it looked and felt more like an anime I probably would have enjoyed it more.

I agree with your analysis of the animation itself, but I don't agree on the causal effect it may have had, relative to other to shows as you mentioned, since that does not explain why none of the other, more traditional, Anime Mirai shorts have also not received any attention or support either in Japan. In other words, LWA was treated no differently and met the same reception as its siblings that debuted together in the Anime Mirai program, this year and last year. I think your speculation about adding fanservice to boost popularity also fails to explain why so many actually do so poorly. |

And yet through KickStarter another episode was completely funded within a few hours. So really your comment is completely ironic. But you seem hell bent on being happy to prove things you are not a fan of are unsuccessful. I am not really sure why. |

It made the 2nd episode longer, it didn't fund another episode. Get your facts straight. |

I think something like Muromi-san is a better example with a score of 7.19.

The episode length was almost doubled and they raised well above the goal. The original goal was $150,000 they raised $650,000. So clearly the series is a success. It it a small population supporting it, of course. But guess what most anime in Japan only has a small population supporting it with a lot of money too. Most Japanese people could care less about most anime series. I can guarantee most of your favorite series are not actually popular in Japan at all beyond a subset of the population. But keep on gloating that something you don't care for is unpopular. |

The only thing that makes LWA look like a western cartoon is that it's actually animated unlike most anime which are basically glorified slideshows. If "actually being animated" is a mark of western stuff... |

@Crispy45 You do realize most Americans hate the Marvel anime, because it was a bastardization of the comic books and lore, right? You love to antagonize Americans/non-Japanese, don't you?
Yeah, Japanese taste is SO much better than Americans, right? Yeah, Lucky Star, Macross F, Gundam SEED Destiny and K-On are better than Wings Of The Honneamise, Big O, Akira(did well in Japan, but it was just a quick fad. Had lasting success overseas), Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Macross Plus, stuff that only did "good-failure" at best. Yeah, so much better. Oh wait, no it goddamn is not. @RyanSaotome Popularity=/=quality Which anime is better? https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcREJdpdd5k2Ggwj8KT09r7KqXMMXwViY8sOkBgFSAwFGPlf9b4d The anime which looks like Batman TAS/Batman Beyond and is a cross between Batman, Giant Robo and Godzilla with kickass giant robots, awesome plots and music, as well as slick visuals, which got no ratings or merchandise sales in Japan, but succeeded in the States OR https://encrypted-tbn1.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSTspSAlOcIbqGTQAkYXFidkqF2cM8fnxxbznAuo5BSWorMuOd0Mg A stupid piece of moe crap, with generic art, stupid plots and everything, but sold over 500,000 BDs and made over $150,000,000 worth of merchandise sales, but has done more or less "meh" everywhere else? If you picked K-On, you must be out of your mind. Big O IS better. Oh and getting turned off to an anime, because it was heavily influenced by "US animation?" That must mean you dislike most anime from the 60s-80s, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, huh? Awesome anime you're missing out on, just because they look like American stuff. @GarnetStyle Same applies for you. Popularity=/=quality. I'd rather have 1 good season of awesome than many seasons of shit. Have some goddamn quality control. Liking things because they are popular without being good is stupid. |
