Reading this review sound like they should have gone all the way about the main guy being the bad guys. I wonder if this is a case of wanting to eat the pie and keep it too, where they wanted to have an evil main character to differentiate it from every other similar premise, but at the same time were afraid of losing people with an outright evil, so they ultimately just made him into a good hearted jerk?

first volume was definitely a bit tough to stomach because of how the protagonist couldn't trust anyone (not that you can blame him). the ending was worth it though and seemed to indicate that he'll be able to cast off the whole "jaded asshole" act from here on out

It does get better. Shield Hero is a slow starter but it gets better the longer you read, in my opinion anyway. Vol1 only scratches the surface.

unimaginatie world is kind of a harsh thing to take down points from as all the fantasy light novels are just like that, so taht means that all will be reviewed to a c ?

This series is based off a web novel series, and there's also a manga adaptation, and each version alters the plot greatly. The premise itself is interesting, but it can feel a lit forced at times.

Just realised that this turned up at my local comic store and I bought it and added it to the Encyclopedia here because it was missing.. and have completely forgotten to read it. Actually, it might be because I read a comment about slave girls, had flashbacks to the Gor novels and blanked it from my memory in the process...
Sounds like I'm not going to enjoy reading it much; I plain refused to get the Aria the Scarlet Ammo novel after the Kindle preview had so many errors (PS: it's "typo" as in "typographical error", not "type-o")

Both are actually correct; the form I used is just the older version before written English took out most of its hyphens - "tomorrow" used to be spelled "to-morrow." I like the way "type-o" looks better, so that's the way I write it, despite the fact that this is the second time I've gotten to explain it.

Well, a C means "average," which is less taking points away and more saying that it achieved "basic fantasy setting." It felt like little or no effort was made to go beyond that, which I haven't felt in other fantasy LNs, like Danmachi or Spice and Wolf.

I'll definitely give it another volume or two - it takes a lot of LN series a few books to get going, I've found.

Oh look, another Ln that "gets better over time". Just like SAO or whatever else you name.
I read some chapters at a friend's house and it was really lame and uncreative. Especially after reading something like The Kingkiller Chronicles by Rothfuss.

ah, then I agree, if anything i find it weird (that they made the effort to) that they used balloons instead of slimes, but waht's done with the balloons plot wise justifies that they are more easily hidden in the clothing, they are used as a means to show how weak shield's attack power actually is, they are used as a toy gift for raph-chan, I also feels there is an effort by novel, etc...author to homogeinize fantasy world-time loop, etc.. rules (though on the novels I ahve read they still ahve not homogeinized power up rules, unlike shounen amnga and chi-physical progress).

I don't feel it ever gets better, if anything I really liked the initial impact of what happens to the hero and how that sets him up for the rest of the plot; the rest of the arcs lack the emotional weight of the first one (if the light novel v01 ends where I think it does), tho it tries to do really different things in each arc to the point of almost feelinglike genre change, but that's the webnovel I know the light novel will deviate around vol 06 just like the manga did.
in general what I liked the most about thais one, is that a good amountof the characetrs are not good or bad people, they are just people with severe flaws, ina severely flawed world (some people would use the word horrible), something similar to gantz, I guess.[/spoiler]

Oh, really? I didn't know this.
I got volume one the other day, but have yet to start reading it. I'm not surprised by this review, because I was told that it is a "slow burn" by people. They're also ones that I trust, so I'm expecting some good things later on...and hope it's not like other series I've seen that have gotten the "it gets better later on" line.
Of course, since I know these people and they've not steered me wrong in the past, I'm willing to put down the cash for Shield Hero. Hopefully, whatever errors have happened in this volume aren't there in the next (yes, impossible, but at least to an extent where it doesn't impact on the read).

everything, everythign that happens gets referenced later, either a few volumes or at the very end or even in the sequel; I found that both to be a very fun detail and the thing taht killed the magna for me. it was like, great now when x and Y happen, it will seem like as asspull :/

I've encountered a few references to "grammatical errors" in the published Shield Hero novels. If anyone can point out specific examples, preferably with page numbers, I'd be very grateful. I am one of the multiple editors for the English language translation of this book series. I'm also a professional grammar & writing college instructor, and I take my work seriously.
I can confirm that the original commercially published Japanese novels are not error free, so I'd really like to confirm whether I actually overlooked or allowed multiple errors in the English translation or if the "grammatical errors" are actually faithful representations of inconsistencies and contradictions present in the original Japanese text.

The entire grammatical errors in Light novels is just rediculous. I mean this is their job right? To translate the book into english? I mean I know that its hard to translate from japanese to english, but that is no excuse to not read over your work multiple times to check for mistakes you made. It just seems like translators finish as fast as possible, then send it to the printer to make copies. It just makes the product look really dumb, and when I try to encourage friends to read and they see said errors, it just leaves a bad impression. Even my favorite series Spice and Wolf is guilty. I mean Volume 7 has the last 15 pages or so printed twice, and in Volume 11, there are two images that should clearly be switched. At times it feels like I could do a better job at putting the books together.

Easy to say, but I doubt that it is in reality. Who knows how much the editor has on their plate, what sort of deadlines they face, and whatever other pressures they may be under.
At the same time...

Not saying you can't complain about issues with novels, I've seen many over time. And, they're not all in LNs.
But you said you could do a better job. Maybe it isn't as easy as you think?
