A few months ago, some of my friends in L.A. released an EP in Japan which includes a remix of one of their cover songs. After finally receiving the CD early this month, I collaborated with an AMV specialist on YouTube to have a video made using the remix and some Initial D Battle Stage 2 footage. And here's the result:

That is a very, very good choice. AMVs that use multiple anime are inevitably harder to do but also have a wider appeal, for obvious reasons. Jihaku hits all the effects and the pacing just right. It's pretty much perfect. It's been one of my favorites for a long time. If I had to pit just one AMV against it, it would have to be Euphoria by Koopiskeva (footage from RahXephon, song is "Must be Dreaming" by Frou Frou), who IMO is the best creator of AMVs ever, period. I would very strongly recommend checking out his videos here... Euphoria in particular, but Momentum and Waking Hour are amazing as well (both are AMVs for Makoto Shinkai films). Evangelion Opus is another one that's pretty frickin' fantastic (song is Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen, and before you laugh, watch the video. It's mesmerizing). I could go on... I have over 100 AMVs saved on my computer after the 1000 or so I've downloaded. But I wouldn't want to be too obnoxious, so I'll refrain for now! |

I'm not sure if anyone has posted this yet, but this is an excellent AMV using mostly still images, that is about Yukino and Arima's relationship in Kare Kano, very soft and melancholy.

Here are the 2008 Otakon AMV winners in case anyone wants to see them. The Haruhi won for best in show as well. Personally I'd have gone with the Death Note one but I'm a sucker for European metals bands hehe. I did enjoy the Baccano swing one a lot though as I love swing music. Seeing Death Note win for Drama category and Eureka for romantic did not surprise me at all either.Another non surprising factor was the best electronica AMV used Daft Punk. Who didn't see that coming?

Not really an AMV but I thought it was hilarious. Its some kind of Kirby/Haruhi hybrid monster.

I am proud to say AMVs suck. Why must all videos have to be set to music, I mean even other movies are set to music on YouTube. It's hard to find an original film scene without it being set to some song. Gah!

What's not to love about using video that you had absolutely nothing to do with, and mesh it together with audio samples that, again, you had nothing to do with, and bring them together in wondrously illegal harmony, just to get more hits and comments than the last fan who tried the same thing with a different set of music or video. It's high morality hypocrites at their finest,I must say.
Do as I say,not as I do types. What they do wrong,is show what should be personal,to the rest of world, making it illegal.Heh,but no one "important" would even look in your general direction or even so much as gives a shit about most of these fan made vids, unless it was crowding up their bandwidth enough for them to notice,or in the highlights of what they happen to be clicking on,that day. AMV don't exist to most of us. |

I have enjoyed many AMVs before, but sadly (especially with the rise of YouTube) the majority of AMVs out there now are made by inexperienced 13-14 year olds, very poorly done, and most of the time the song and the anime don't match at all. It's hard to find a high quality AMV these days.
