I loved his laugh in comedic roles. It always made me laugh. He's one of the guys one could point to when people try to say it's impossible to understand the emotions being conveyed in the Japanese tracks vs an English dub.

This is very sad, especially if it was suicide.

Suicide or otherwise, this news saddens me greatly. This man was a legend. The industry will miss him dearly. My condolences to his friends and family.

That sucks. Though it's quite odd how he died just around the time Chris Rager was hospitalized.

I never watched DBZ with the Japanese track on, but I'll certainly miss the voice of Dozle Zabi and Bask Om.

There's some more info on Japanese Wikipedia.
Apparently he was losing his vision due to diabetes and was having an increasingly hard time reading the scripts. More info here: http://www.zakzak.co.jp/entertainment/ent-news/news/20100120/enn1001201608010-n2.htm Yuko Minaguchi is saying she may not play Videl now on Dragonball Kai because of this. |

That is sad. One would think there would be ways around that, but I don't doubt Japan wouldn't be as crazy about the disabilities stuff as we are here. Even then, it would be hard to switch over to memorization over reading-maybe impossible considering how long a script gets finished before taping. Too bad it came to this, but he probably could see no other out. It does seem to fit into the whole not making waves thing.

I was trying to phrase that I wouldn't doubt Japan doesn't have anything like the Americans with Disabilities act where we have to make wheelchair-friendly access, etc., to most buildings or make allowances for disabled workers so that they can do their jobs with the rest of us. I work in an older building which had to have some accomodations put in, although we still have no elevator (any disabled workers work on the ground floor where we have ramps, etc.). It seems the attitude portrayed in anime, etc., is people find it better to remove themselves from society if they perceive themselves to be a burden rather than for society to make allowances so that disabled people can continue to contribute.
However, I've never read anything on the subject of disabled workers in Japan, so I have no idea. Maybe it was just pride not to be a burden to anyone that brought this about. It's sad because Daisuke Gouri was a wonderful voice actor. |
