I don't want to go too into how I graded it, because it's a little too "meta", but suffice it to say, I factored in my own enjoyment of the single episode with some of what you mentioned, the possible issues some newcomer might have with it. Mostly it was from my own perspective, though. The single episode was a "B" because it was a lot of what I've seen before in Gundam, but it was treated well and didn't feel too tired.
I don't know if I can talk about the quality of the copy I watched. |

In fairness, the review did say that the Blu-Ray disc release we're all buying wasn't provided for the review. But look--it's a current OVA with movie-level animation quality produced in high definition from the beginning. What do you think?! It's reasonable to conclude that it's taking full advantage of the format. |

This. The screener we were provided with was not a BD. We'll probably have another review up when the BD streets that also covers the dub. This one is simply and solely about the content itself. |

Yes, how dare we ask for a reasonable price point compared to every other anime release on the market. What whiners we are, to think that laws of economics should apply to Bandai! Edit: For reference, the law in question is that in a competitive market, demand decreases as price increases. That is the more you raise the price, the fewer people will buy. |

Good list, but that still does not give you all the background for Unicorn you will need. The series has quite a few references to Gundam ZZ, one of the main characters is related to a character who only appears in ZZ, BUT that show is not licensed in the west. Either way this show IS meant for the 30-something fans in Japan who grew up with the original UC timeline, its marketing campaign in Japan made that clear. But the visuals and production quality should make up for the confusing plot for newcomers-wise, hopefully. |

It looks epic but I might order it. Also http://www.amazon.com/Justice-League-Exclusive-Lithograph-Blu-ray/dp/B002R0ELJ2/ref=pd_cp_d_3
This was $27 bucks. Food for thought. |

you missed a series ZZ Gundam, techinally to get the full expereience you need to watch these series, Mobile Suit Gundam, Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Moible Suit Gundam Double Zeta and Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack, reason I say Double Zeta in there a Puru is in the enemy roster and I won't do the biggest reveal that's a throwback to ZZ. |

Can someone please answer my question? Is there going to be a DVD version of this? I'm not going to buy a Blu Ray player just for this. They can make the choice of selling this on DVD for those of us who probably won't upgrade and download it or just release it on regular DVD.

There's a subtitled DVD release planned for the same day, but as far as they've said it's R2 only.

But what are we really getting from "the rest of the market"? Since FUNi is the big dog, I'll use them as an example. I've been getting plenty of their releases since the new model has become the norm. But besides a dub, I feel that I'm getting less and less content with every release I buy. No extras, no manthom, less artwork, very sparse commentary... I'm sorry, but having trailers on the disc is not an extra. In contrast, I picked up the BD release of Freedom this past holiday. It was amazing to look at, had a dub, with plenty of digests and other goodies enhancing the viewing experience. Yes, I payed 2 or 3 times more then "the rest of the market"s price point, but I actually FEEL that I got my monies worth; a feeling I haven't had in a while. It's all about what you're willing to pay for. And now a comment actually about the release: If my brother gets an HDTV before his birthday, I'll probably get him this release. |

My point of view is that extras are great, but they're not multiple times more valuable than the show itself, especially if it's not a series I already know I really like. I would pay a premium for extensive extras on a re-release of Revolutionary Girl Utena, my favorite series of all time, but not on a show I'm blind-buying, or on something like....oh, I don't know. Daphne in the Brilliant Blue. Gundam falls squarely into the second and third categories for me. Bandai Visual's pricing essentially prices any shows I like but don't love completely out of the range where it makes sense for me to buy them.
Also, unless I'm missing something in the announcements, Gundam Unicorn's only "extras" are an English dub and subtitles in five languages. Not exactly a premium product, even if you're willing to pay extra for one. |

Or, you know, I could just watch the first Gundam series to fulfill my anime fan obligation to have seen at least one Gundam series. Really, I'm not a huge mecha fan, so you're not going to get me watching this much continuity. I just need something to watch where I won't be confused out of my mind as to what's going on, If crunchyroll has the original up right now, I'll definitely check it out. |

I would recommend seeing at least the original series (or movie trilogy), Zeta Gundam, and Char's Counterattack to get the full experience of this particular feature. Like I said in the review, it favors the experienced Gundam fan heavily, which can either be a plus or minus, depending on who you are.

Personally, I'm not too interested in the release. But like I said, I'd be getting it for my brother. He's the uber-fan, especially the UC universe. And it's not something he would get himself, which is the whole point of a gift. |
