The story was really quite primitive in DA:O, the characters made it fun.
And no thanks, please no live-action ME. Game universes should get proper CGI movies, like FFVII Advent Children. |

He also overstated how much the initiative costs (it's the $10 initiative) and what it does (allows used copies to access online content.) It in no way effects Regular gameplay and viewing if you will, as seen by a previous EA feature release Dead Space (so they have already a sci-fi animation so they are trying fantasy this time.) So yeah he (PJ) is trying to stir thing up... I look forward to this offering and hope it may pave the way for future productions. |

I hardly called Halo legends disappointing since the DVD sold 300,000 + and making more then 5 million dollars. I was kind of shocked and suprised that Funimation would do a Dragon Age anime co-production. I thought Manga Entertainment should probably do that one since Manga and EA had done the Dante's Inferno anime, and Dead Space: Downfall. I thought Bioshock, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, or Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six would be great anime adaptation. But this, well I'm quite suprised.
I don't think not all video game made into live-action movie are bad. I like the Resident Evil live-action movie series, Silent Hill, Tomb Raider, and The Prince of Persia live-action movie. If you're going to stop doing video game into live-action movie. Then do the same for the book including James Bond (Yes, if you didn't know James Bond was based on a book). After Thunderball, most of the 007 movie started to deviate from the book. Example: -The Living Daylight took place in 1980's and had Bond teaming up with Mujahadeen in the movie. In the short story, that never happen and it pre-dated the movie. -Casino Royale took place in modern time and they fight terrorists and a secret organization called QUANTUM. Well the novel took place during the cold war and Bond's enemy in the novel was SMERSH and agents from the Soviet Union. -the movie, Quantum of Solace well despite it carries the title of the story. well guess what, in the story Bond attended a boring dinner party and none of that appear in the movie. There's other movie that completely deviate from original sources like the X-men movie. Colossus didn't have a Russian accent, and I never hear any complain of that (well maybe the X-men fanboys would yap about that). Should we stop adapting novels, and comic book into live-action movie because they deviate away from the original sources, because if you want to stop adapting video game into live-action movie, the same thing must go to adapting novels, and comic book into movie. Yes I am aware of that. If you think the Mass Effect movie will be given the treatment it deserves you are crazy. It needs a massive Avatar sized budget to pull off what it needs to do on the level it needs to and being based on a video game it will never get the budget it needs. That also if it ever even gets off the ground. The Gears of War movie was a done deal. It had a Director and everything and was months away from going into production and that collapsed into a flaming heap. Like Mister V said I don't think they should do a live action ME. They should do it CG. That way they would never have to worry about casting and whatnot ruining the movie and Bioware could be in complete control of the project.(They are producers on the movie but Doom taught us that means NOTHING). |

For the ME movie to be good it can't follow the plot of the games. Shepard shouldn't even be the main character unless the movie focuses on his experience on Akuze (the horrible event he experienced before ME1 and what got him recognized by the council to give him Specter status.)
If the movie follows the game's plot it will fail immensely. The game's plot is extremely long. Hours upon hours of gameplay. Movies, however, can only go to like 4 hours at maximum... and even that is pushing it. I can only see the movie being maybe 2 hours... and that's hardly enough time to tell the story of the first game. That's why the plot of the games should not be the plot of the movie. As for this news, I've never played Dragon Age but I'm thinking about trying it. I would much rather have Dragon Age as the anime project than ME because of the live-action movie. But even if there was no live-action movie, I really can't see ME as an anime... or a good one anyway. ME would have a better chance of success as a live-action movie than an anime. And that better chance of success is still rather small to begin with. |

The video game industry is huge and Dragon Age is a popular game, but not nearly as much as something like Halo. I'll be interested to see if this is popular enough to sell more than an anime license. I can't see this selling a ton of copies, at least nowhere near what Halo did, hopefully I'm wrong though.

It's been a while since I've gotten into a sword-and-sorcery fantasy anime. I'm looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

No, anime will make the creepy Little Sisters into loli moe, and you know it.
Oh yeah, the "dating sim" part, where you could work on which of 3 girls to boink (though I guess they kept the boinking scenes classy) and affect your game.
DLC and online play are where they make their money now. So basically, you're paying $60 for an "incomplete" game. |

I love the original Dragon Age game (Awakenings was kind of a letdown) but I'm wondering how this will work out when a huge part of the game's appeal is the amount of control you have over the story. I know the way I play is not the way most people choose to play and I honestly wouldn't be interested in watching a story where a made-up Grey Warden character makes a bunch of decisions I disagree with.
(I'm one of like five people who really liked Anora, ha.) Last edited by youjik33 on Mon Jun 07, 2010 1:32 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Interesting. I hope this doesn't turn out like all of the other western-based "anime" projects such as Halo Legends and the majority of the Animatrix.
By the way, I'm fairly certain I read that a live action Mass Effect movie is in the works, so that's probably why they didn't go with that. |

Dragon Age: Origins is a dark fantasy real-time WRPG with a medieval/Dungeons & Dragons theme to it. The game is developed by the amazing Bioware studio. Sadly, DA:O follows the Bioware cliché as seen in this chart. Recent Bioware games also feature "emotionally engaging moments" conversation choices. Do not get me wrong here. I have seen my friends play the game and it is a great game. My only problem with DA:O is the overuse of blood and gore in the game to have it labeled as "dark fantasy." To me, dark fantasy is something along the lines of Demon's Souls. To call the animated feature film an "anime feature film" is a misnomer. In my opinion, collaborating with Funimation does not make it "anime." But hey, video games and anime seem to go hand in hand together. |

So Funi's new co-production is based off a video game and NOT a book? Bummer.
At this point I can't see myself buying this. Video game adaptations have been disappointments to me too many times to count (this includes live-action productions). Now if the announcement said something like, "This project will have a story adaptation by insert fantasy author name here" ... I might have some hope that it would have an interesting and coherent plot. *grumbles* |

Well normally I'd agree with you on the video game assessment, Tuxedocat, anime has their hits and duds based on video games, Gungrave comes to mind.
We're just gonna have to roll the dice and hope for a hit (or near hit) as opposed to crash and burn failure, it does have somethings going for it (pencil and paper RPG and novels help...) |

Quoted for truth. It would be impossible for them to include even just the core plot of the first game and have it be good. I hope they go with the right alternative. I'm fine with them cutting certain things from the plot, but I hold no expectations given the track-record of video games to movies.
This actually brings up the reason I've been against a Mass Effect anime from the get go. I can just see the horror: Shepard is an obnoxiously loud teenage boy with shounen-hair. Ashly would be the token Tsundere, Kaiden the pervy-otaku, Liara the clutz, Tali the nerdy yuri, and Dr Chakwas would be the ridiculously busty drunk who's sensitive about her age. And I'm sure they would find someway to throw a moe-bait loli in there. I shudder at the thought of it all . |
