Hi!
Shortly before Christmas I finally got my copy of Polish limited edition of uncensored GitS. (Yay! I'm sooo happy! ^^) For a few year now I've been (and still am ^^v) a lucky owner of the GitS english edition by Dark Horse comics. And here the big question: has the GitS manga ever been published in the US, UK or Canada in the uncensored version? |

I don't know. I'm curious though... Is your nick a reference to marine life?

(still off-topic, but...) we answered this one a while ago (see Stray Dog Strut's post most of the way down) As for GiTS, I'm not a big fan of the manga, but I seem to recall reading that the author preferred the censored version to the uncensored one.. not merely found it "acceptable", but in fact preferred it to the original. (or so i recall; someone shoot me down if i'm wrong) |

I can't say I'm all that surprised, I've heard the same thing about the edited version of A-Kite and a few others. People assume that if an artist draws a lot of nudity and fan service it's because they're perverts, but that's not really true at all. A lot of them time they draw it because it sells. People often confuse "Director's Cut" for "Uncut" when that isn't always the case. I've heard that the Directors Cut for Kite in the US is the prefered version because it cuts out a few of the needless sex scenes, NOT because it's uncut (which it isn't). Sometimes artistic vision is less than what you've actualy got. Emerje |

From http://www.animenation.net/news/askjohn.php?id=393:
And I can tell you from experience that the fans don't prefer it. For one thing, very few people seem to realize that both versions available here are edited. The few people I've told have unanimously lost their tempers over it; and I've seen rants and petitions about it at various places around the web. From my experience, it doesn't seem to be lookeed upon very favorably at all. Your point is still well taken, though. |

First of all, I'm not all that knowledgeable about GitS or Shirow's works, but this topic caught my interest as I remember seeing article on local games magazine few years back about the censoring of UK/US version of GitS manga (I tried to find the article, but couldn't). I recall that there was few of those "missing pictures" shown as well... and that magazine was intended for kids... Oh well, the staff that made the article heard about it later on.
Those missing pages were (and apparently still are) published on Shirow's Intron Depot 1 artbook. They were removed from the manga because they would have caused "for adult only" label on the cover of the book, which in turn would have dropped its sales. Of course, this would have been bad for Dark Horse, though Shirow removed the pages by his own decision. As for US/UK/Canada release of the uncensored version, never heard of it and did not find anything when searched about it this time either. Ouch. Nothing is as funny as searching information with keywords that include "uncensored" and "manga". |

I wonder why DH didn't releas a limited collectors edition of GitS uncensored version?
The could have made it into a deluxe limited edition with better cover, expanded gallery and some comments on the 'making-of'. I'm sure many people would buy it, or if they were afraid of losing money they could always make it available per internet or direct order. Thus they would be sure how many folks are ordering (in this way was the Polish version 'surveyed' before printing, it was only available by internet order). But as I am not a publisher, and Americans have some really weird laws, I can't possibly know the reasons for only publishing the cut version... ^^ |

Hmmm, that's very interesting, I'm going to have to share that with the guy that told me that the directors cut was done for artistic reasons. He'll probably blow up though, He's a big Kite fan. Emerje |

ghoti: Kodansha just released a bilingual edition of GITS unedited. You can find the catalog number in
an earlier update at www.studioproteus.com . Oh, and GITS 2 will also be edited of the gratuitous porn scenes, so that it will allow you to appreciate Shirow's thread-bare plots: ) sailor: The true "director's cut" of Kite would be the original, uncut Japanese version which is not available in America. Though the irony is that even with that version, it's still mosaiced. The German version is totally unedited. squeak: Of course, this would have been bad for Dark Horse, though Shirow removed the pages by his own decision. He never put those pages in by his own decision either. He's not famous in Japan, so he has to draw porn for a living. ghoti: I wonder why DH didn't releas a limited collectors edition of GitS uncensored version? Shirow probably didn't want to see the porn released in the U.S. once he made his final decision. |

Hey, I passed that link for Kite on to the guy I was talking about and he did like I said he would, he blew up (when I say "blew up" I don't mean got angry, I mean writes, a lot!). Check it out, it explains things a bit more than that quick column did.
