What I want to know is why did that person think that Cowboy Bebop was the obvious choice? Eva is an obvious and even InuYasha, but Cowboy Bebop? That was actually the first time I've heard of someone disapproving of the ending. I mean, IMO anyone ending might not seem true to show.

Though, the thought of a second season or if Spike was still alive in that second season is a fun or funny thought... >.>

(And what was up with all of the Change!?)

Very good with the car references.

I could see that hypothetical (pathetic?) anime now:

Hitachi the Sand Warrior and Mitsubishi the Sword Master in
Battle of the Brands

SYNOPSIS:
In a world where samurai cut down commoners like so much rice, and ninja rule the night, one warrior rises up from his flood-ravaged village to challenge the oppressive order. Endowed with the Dune Brand, his clan's symbol of power, he can crushe all of his opponents with mere granules of sand.

But because of his propensity to best all who challenge him, he quickly gains a powerful enemy. Mitsubishi, young scion of the Hagazuki domain and bearer of the feared Blade Brand, hears of Hitachi's victories and wishes to cut him down to size before he destroys the ruling order.

Both of the warriors wish for nothing more than to meet in battle...

-----

Each episode will run from 6 AM to 6:30 on weekdays, and the (single-volume) DVDs will sell in the low hundreds.

And apparently neither did I! That's what I get for going on memory.

Notably he did go out of his way in that particular proposal to explain that "ki means fire in Japanese" and then went on to explain how "hardcore fans" will love it and "casual fans" will think it's just a cool Japanese name.

I always thought "ki" was the same as "chi" - the stuff Dragon Ball/Z/GT characters seem to use to shoot laser beams out of their hands or become absurdly fast/muscular after an hour "powering up".

The Toyota-kun line made me literally laugh out loud.

Seconded.
I usually laugh out aloud over at least one thing in a Zac column, but the ToyotaxMitsubishi was unexpected GOLD.

That said...I noticed the whole 'KI MEANS FIRE LOL"=/=correct thing myself. Rolling Eyes It would be even funnier had this person named their character 'hi' though. (and they'd pronounce it like the colloquial way of saying 'hello' to further the lulzfest)

Seriously, you should see the Tokyo Mew Mew fandom. 80% of their 'original mew mew' characters are official pictures of the real characters with their hair/clothing colours edited in photoshop. I'm serious. Some of these kids even say "when I get this published..." alot as well. It's kinda...embarrassing.

EDIT=Oh and about those Anime Castle ads, they just seem to get stupider. The one at the top of the page while I was reading this week's collumn had what looked like Haruhi mollesting Mikuru with "Do you get caught watching anime?" Which kinda implies all anime is porn or something, especially with that image.

Your fans, right. Forgot about them. They'll be too busy writing slashfic about Mitsubishi being secretly in love with his nemesis, Toyota-kun.

Why do I get the strange feeling that it's already been done?

And yeah, pretty much all anime advertisements I've seen have been either laugh-worthy or cringe-worthy. Usually the latter. I mean, to quote a semi-recent ad, there was a Suzuka ad which quoted a review that said "Suzuka is a real b****". I don't quite see how that's going to get people to buy that one...

And yeah, the Shuffle! one is pretty bad, too. And I'm one of those folks who actually likes that sort of show...

Time travel in Utawareru Mono? No wonder the plot doesn't make sense to you, man.

To be honest, I didn't like the Avu Kamuw very much myself (the bleeding mecha you refer to), but in retrospect I find that their introduction effectively represents the darkening of the story. The anime made no real attempt to explain the mysteries behind Dii, Mutsumi and the Iceman, though, and when I explored these in the original game, all my complaints about the ending pretty much faded away.

In short, if I was going to change Utawareru Mono's ending in any way, I would extend it to include more from the game.

Would I give them too much credit if I hoped if the slashfic writers hooked up Mitsubishi with an Edsel?
(great, now I'm wondering if "My Mother the Car" ever made it to DVD)

Anyway, all fake "vote yes/no" ads are bad. The ones that have dumb questions and scantily clad 7th graders need to be redesigned.

That being said, I've been pretty impressed with the Anime Corner Store ones. Most of them are cute, funny, and much less gimmicky.

The best anime taglines are often wasted on porn. For example, take the one for Lady Blue, the sequel to La Blue Girl:

"Take Miko Mido home! (Everyone else has.)"

It still kind of amazes me that I'll meet "adults" (as in, people who have reached the legal definition of adulthood but clearly not the maturity level that is commonly associated with the age) who are doing the "Ooh, I'm gonna photoshop/trace official art and now it's my ORIGINAL CHARACTER" thing. What's even WORSE are the ones who are writing fanfiction that they really truly expect that it's going to get published/turned into an anime/etc. (Thankfully, these are extremely rare in the fanfiction community.)

I'm all for creativity, but keep it in perspective. It's about ten billion times less likely to get your Amazing Anime Series about Gaara's REAL Past Story created than it is for your Toyota-Mitsubishi yaoi romance or whatever.

We need a reality bat. Er, to tap people nicely with.

I don't want to turn this into a whole Evangelion debate, but I truly think that the film ending was probably the best of all. I enjoyed it, anyways.

Also, Answerman, I have an idea for a new anime. It's about a boy named Hiroshi who finds a demon in a cave that gives him a magic sword. But people from all over the galaxy want it because wielding it will give you unlimited power. And so, sexy space chicks (Names: Kanna, Hanako, Narusegawa) come to take him down in a hilarious harem setting. Of course, the main enemy Sasuke wants to use the power to take over the universe, but there's more to his motive than meets the eye! I call it Hiro no Ken Muyo!

What do you think?

I'm assuming any person with the creativity and know how that would want to get a show into production, live action or animated, also knows where to properly aim their ambitions at. This is the problem with the owning the Answerman column. Everyone who has no clue of what they're doing thinks its a good idea to send Zac their proposal for "Rutona the Samurai, Quest for Kageho".

There's a money statement. It's not that every idea inspired by anime is a bad one... only the ones pitched to Answerman. Wink

It does bug me when "script" proposals involve episode summaries that barely qualify as paragraphs, much less a legitimate synopsis. What it suggests is that whoever dreams these ideas up only takes it to its formulative stages. As if that's good enough to pitch to somebody so they'll buy it and take it off your hands. Even if it was a good idea, that alone does not make good entertainment. It's the execution of the idea that determines its worth.

I'll admit that I had an idea floating about for the last few years. And if I was to send a summary to Answerman or any number of improper channels, it would be just another e-mail to delete. Instead, I figured out the best way to execute the idea, considered my abilities and resources, and went from there. Yes, it's just a silly webnovel, but it's something tangible that can people can read and judge beyond a mere summary.

These people need to sit down and actually write their ideas out beyond a vague concept or some rough sketches. That's when the idea sinks or swims. Until you know you've got something (and neutral readers agree), don't waste our time.

Out of all the "question" marketing taglines, possibly the worst is Spiral's, "What are the Blade Children?"

No freaking joke. What a waste of time that anime was.

I didn't read most of the alternate endings, since I haven't seen the series they discuss, but to the person who composed the one for Cowboy Bebop: I feel like you missed the point of the entire series. Spike's whole life apart from Julia was, as he said, "just a dream." Without her, the dream's over. This has nothing at all to do with "glorifying death," or even vengeance; Spike has nothing left to live for, and so he goes to confront the one remnant of his past, the one man capable of showing him if he is, in his words, "truly alive." Your suggestion would, in my humble opinion, utterly destroy what's one of the best endings of any series I've ever seen. That is all.

Oh boy, time to show a bit of biased...

On to the Answerfans' entry for Rumbling Hearts...there's a reason they call some endings bittersweet, and this one is the perfect example.

spoiler[KimiNozo's ending was, at worst, a perfect example of how characters change through the story. In this example you have Haruka, the once super-shy and passive character, standing up for herself and showing her strength in accepting how things changed over 3 years...Mitsuki was on the opposite end, showing how a strong-willed character needed to take a couple steps back and let someone else help them without having to take charge.

In the case of what Zach Leight stated, there's no need to have a death of a character to add weight to the already heavy feelings, as it is solidified in the actions of the characters during those last episodes, and its ending wasn't meant to be tragic but bittersweet in that Haruka had her desires answered as did the other characters. After-all, it's expected when the title roughly translates to The Eternity You Desire.]

Of course, this is just been my long-standing feelings as an old-time fan of KimiNozo Smile
