He really needs to do this. He's probably the only man in the country with enough cachet to actually sway public opinion on the subject.

How about City Of Life And Death? It's not animated but it is pretty brutal...

Seriously I don't know what to think. Part of me hates this. Another part of me says, he's 72 and has given the world his best for so long, and deserves to retire. Very mixed feelings to say the least. Confused

Well it was a fun ride~ He made some truly fantastic films throughout his career that are regarded as classics now. I am looking forward to seeing his final film (wind rises).

Can't wait to see Kaze Tachinu. I'd like for him to keep retiring until he's at least 100. That'd be best.

"Retires from Making Feature Films" hmm. okay. Completely understandable. 72 and still smoking though? Yeah, he definitely has more days behind him than there are ahead of him. To me this news just reads "no more full length, years to create from start to finish type projects" only.

But I think as long as he's still breathing he's going to be involved in animating/creating something. So "Retiring" from Ghibli could just be a way for him to do his thing, but on a much smaller scale? I want to imagine he still has something very specific and personal that he'd like to share with the world. And I'm looking forward to whatever this may be, even if it's just a short, or series of short films. That'd be a fine way to cap off his illustrious career.

If Miyazaki is really retiring from making movies, are not these good news in way? I am not very familiar with his latest films, but I have heard they were not very good. I believe Zac and Justin also talked in an ANN Cast about the low quality of Miyazaki's last few films.

His retirement stuck like Ric Flair's retirement.

Hmmm..........

He did state that this will give him more time for other projects.
Be it short ones instead of feature films. Rolling Eyes

But I hope this will give Miyazaki the time to come up with a sequel to Porco Rosso.
He has been hinting at making a sequel for it for awhile now. Wink

With his retirement history I kinda have to shrug at this announcement. Is he actually retiring, is it once again temporary till he doesn't like what Ghibli is doing, or is the whole thing just Oscar buzz.

I thought he wanted to make a Porco Rosso sequel?

I lament this, but let be honest with ourselves people; he said everything he wanted to say by 2001.

Moving Castle and Ponyo were good eye candy but basically retreads. The Wind Rises, however, looks promising.

He's had a wonderful career and left such a legacy, he should be able to look back on his moviemaking days with pride now! Bye bye Miyazaki (til later?)

It seems surprisingly honest of Hayao. (The sons kill their fathers, after all.)

Woooooooooooooooooooahhhhh that's like the Game of Thrones dialogyest thing anyone's ever said on ANN, awesome
