That description of the appeal of "sudden girlfriend / boyfriend" series was nothing short of epic. Good work, Zac.

Sudden girlfriend almost falls under that whole plotscene with the harem anime: suddenly you're surrounded by cute girls and such. This particular case there's only one girl, but you never know.

I wish I could rewatch some of the anime I have, but there are so many shows I still have yet to see and dvds arrives in the mail faster than I can watch them. I'd love to rewatch Elfen Leid, KGNE, Kashimashi, and Kanon among others (Ok, so I like anime that begins with "K", what of it =P) but I currently also have Karin (*sigh*), When They Cry, Slayers, and Fate/Stay Night sitting around waiting for their first watch-through with a few odd dvds still on order from TRSI. Oh well, one of these days I'll catch up hopefully and get to revisit those series' I've been wanting to. It's been close to a year since I've seen Elfen Leid =\

There is this notion that it's some sort of huge injustice when your favorite crazy "niche" title isn't as popular as Naruto, and I never really understood that. It's like complaining that everyone's reading Harry Potter but you're reading Artemis Fowl and why doesn't everyone also love Artemis Fowl as much?

Actually it's very simple, but to clarify why is to point out that it's NOT like your Harry Potter/Artemis Fowl comparison on the grounds that despite its relative obscurity, at least you can still actually GET Artemis Fowl with ease. The same cannot be said for popular anime vs crazy niche stuff because of the decrease in overall scale.

Zac I will love you forever for the Artemis shout out which is a series I like just as much as Harry Potter. On a side note the Artemis Fowl series is an international bestseller. Not as popular as Harry Potter but then no books in the modern era are. So while I dispute the relative obsurity statement I agree that it's not a good comparison.

I do think people need to get over their hang ups about what is and is not popular. We all like what we like. What does it matter if a show is popular or not? If you saw enough of it to have an opinion then getting the show was clearly not a problem. I can see how popularity becomes an issue for collectors who want to own R1 DVD's of every title they like but the vast majority of anime fans probably don't fall into that group. I certainly don't. Otherwise popularity is just the whims of the masses and not worth disecting too much.

To answer the question I never rewatch anything. Technically I rewatch Naruto because I used to watch the fan subs but now I watch it on TV but I don't really think that counts. I watched haruhi about 3 or 4 times. That's it. I am more likely to rewatch an episode I think is good immediately rather then later at another sitting. So occasionally I will rewatch an episode I just watched. However once it's out of my DVD player it will never make it back in.

I rewatch Haruhi because it makes me laugh. I have a job that can be very depressing sometimes but the Haruhi antics never fail to get a chuckle out of me. I have probably watched the opening episode silliness a dozen times. Humor is really th only thing I am likely to want to rewatch. I think the Now and Then Here and There is one of the greatest anime of all time. I have seen it once and I do not EVER want to see it again.

@Zac: Yeah, that's about what I expected. Anime hyper *Submitted the 'Sudden Girlfriend' question* I'm not so totally naive that I really expected an answer other than 'generic wish-fulfillment' for the extreme majority of cases. It might be interesting to have that sort of perspective, though.

Point well made. Though anime that do NOT do this can be just as, if not more, interesting. To Aru Majutsu no Index, which recently premiered, comes to mind. And such plot devices can work well if there's more of a focus on comedy (Seto no Hanayome; gangster mermen and frequent assassination attempts, along with a Sudden Girlfriend who's actually got a personality). At least, that's how I tend to look at it. I'm nowhere near as discerning as you are; I can enjoy most series, without worrying about art, plot, or anything else.

Still, thank you for taking the time to answer my question. ^^ It was the answer I expected, but I had been hoping for your take on the idea after it paraded into my head.

There are two different kinds of re-watchable shows, IMO.

The first are shows that you can watch every so often just for yourself. Trigun and Cowboy Bebop are examples of this for me. They have exceptionally good pacing. I also enjoy offerings from Full Metal Panic and Full Metal Alchemist.

The second are shows that you want to expose another person to. You're happy to watch them again, but more excited in having another person experience them for the first time. These would include Evangelion and Gurren Lagann for me.

(Heck, I'd probably watch Gurren Lagann again by myself but there's a special kind of awesome in having another person do a double-take or cheer along with you. After all, that's the way Team Dai-Gurren rolls!)

Anime isn't just another animated media, like here in America were you get lame cartoons nowdays (I mention Nick 90´s toons like "Hey Anorld" and so on).

Blasphemy! Hey Arnold was a wonderful cartoon with a unique lead and some real tearjerker moments.

I've noticed people talking about not having time to rewatch, and I think this is a key component to the older and newer generations of anime fans' dedication to rewatching.

I got into anime fandom back when Inuyasha was appearing on Adult Swim for the first time. At that time, Yu Yu Hakusho was also on Adult Swim. They showed the same 20 episodes over and over again, I swear, for about a year. A number of shows on Adult Swim have also run through multiple times. And after watching a show on Adult Swim, I'd hunt it down online, buy the DVDs, and rewatch them over and over again.

Now I barely rewatch series. Why? Netflix. I don't have to buy DVDs. I can watch as many series as I want with little cost to me ($8 a month for one dvd at a time, and I can go through 3 DVDs on a good week?) I do this for a variety reasons: to see a wider variety of genres and techniques, to be able to understand and have a conversation with a larger portion of the fanbase, and just for fun. Wink But this leaves me less time to watch older series that I love. I'm fairly confident that those who download anime have even less time because they have access to a larger range of shows directly from Japan. So the fact that the newer fans have more access means they have less time to focus devotedly on one show.

That doesn't mean I haven't collected Yu Yu Hakusho and still don't watch my favourite episodes when I feel like it. I still can get obsessed about a good series.

I've lost track of how many times I've rewatched Bebop, GITS, EVA. But the all time champ has to be FLCL. LMAO every time!

And as far as "sudden girlfriend", isn't that why there's so much porn?

Cool

Forgot Porco Rosso!

Well the only anime series i have watched multiple times is Berserk. I feel that each time i watch it i find something i missed earlier such as the significance of a quote or the poignancy of certain scenes.

"Listen here boy, this is the only path that leads to the castle. Those who really want to make it to the castle must either step over the ones who have fallen or stay here to pave the road for those who have the will to make it."

I rewatch many OVAs and movies but i rarely have the time to watch a great anime TV series again (Monster is at the top of that list but at 70+ episodes is nigh on impossible for me at the moment!) but Berserk is about the only exception to this rule!

Rewatch meter:

Recently: Maria Watches Over Us (going on 4 times). Catching all the subtle meanings to what is spoken and what happens is great.

Beck: Not the whole thing, but good chunks of it. I can not get enough.

Kashimashi: 3 times through and I am still catching stuff I missed in my Yuri enhanced daze on previous viewings.

I also find with Media Blaster's long release dates that I rewatch significant portions of previous release to catch up to the current disk, Simoun, Strawberry Panic, Otobuku come to mind.

Been through FLCL many times, all it takes is 30 seconds of the first episode and I am in for all 6.

Episode wise: Cowboy Bebop: Hard Luck Woman and Neon Genisis Evangelion: Splitting of the Breast, I throw those two in at least once a month still.

As far as Anime I love but have seen just once (not willing yet to put myself through the gut punch of a rewatch): Now and Then, Here and There, and Saikano.

I love to rewatch the anime I own. I see no reason to spend the money on a show that I don't think I will want to rewatch at least once a year. I can try out as many different shows as I want through Netflix and buy anything I feel I must have so I can rewatch it as much as I want. Over time I develop memories with each show and when I am feeling a certain way or durring a certain time of the year I get cravings to watch specific anime.

The "sudden girlfriend" genre exists because it fulfills a very basic fantasy for many a nerd: rather than dealing with whatever crippling mental or social issues you have, you will be assigned a girlfriend through some crazy fantasy scenario - like the magical MILF [and/or lolita] academy accidentally sent you an indentured sex maid without checking the paperwork - without you actually having to be an interesting, likable or socially skilled person. Your magical girlfriend will also be bound by whatever plot-device rules are necessary to tolerate your bullshit, love you forever, and find your revolting personal habits charming, even when someone better comes along, which they probably will around episode 9.

It's wish fulfillment. Just like a lot of people envision themselves as Bruce Willis running across a field of broken glass and then leaping off of a skyscraper, just as so many daydream of pointing a battle-weary gladius at the emperor of Rome and delivering a badass speech about his inevitable death, so too do many daydream about a world wherein a smokin' hot girl or guy is gifted to us through magical means, one who bindly, stupidly accepts our faults and never questions our judgment, regardless of how much of a gigantic goddamn loser we might be.

Harsh much? Shocked

Actually, that reminds me of a friend: loves anime, hates anime fans. Laughing
And he's in charge of the local big con's anime programming, AMV, and cosplay skits (obviously, he doesn't watch the cosplay skits)! Twisted Evil

My take on the thing with certain animes getting more exposure than others: Meine Liebe--why the hell has that show NOT been licensed? Am I the only person who wants it picked up for R1? Then we've got classics like Mad Bull 34 and Angel Cop that have long since gone out of print, forcing me and others who missed them the first time around to "summon" them.

Rewatching: I rewatch anime all the time, but how often I do depends on the show. If it's a short show like Cyber City Oedo 808, Afro Samurai, Ex-Driver, or FLCL, maybe a couple times a year. Anything longer? Depends on how many DVDs I have of that show, or if I'm watching it on any streaming channels or downloads, whether or not I like it enough to rewatch it. Movies? Same deal with short TV shows and OVAs.

Flake: Cute video, but we still haven't seen an actual flake. What's going on with that? Makes me want to send a flake e-mail as a C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER to break this streak. I miss the flakes and their funny letters, such as that one kid who thought he was Naruto and wanted to shoot ninja lightning out his ass.

2 issues with No flakes... its kind sad, that's usually my favorite part. May be I will write some pseudo flakes to answerman, to keep him from getting bored to death.
