Wait, the timeline said that Japan accepted unconditional surrender "contrary" to IRL? That makes no sense since they did accept unconditional surrender.

IT DOES.

They still surrender as they do in our history but the bombs that were dropped on Japan in our timeline? They're dropped on Berlin instead.
You've also got major divergences in the 50s, with the space race occurring early.

This series has a plethora of media fleshing out its backstory, and it strikes me as a franchise that wants to be more than just fanservice with no regard for a serious plot/backstory, yet its backstory in the show is full of holes and none of its other media plugs them. Seems to me that this show is trying to rise above other fanservice mecha shows like Infinite Stratos but is falling short. If they weren't going to do historical fiction right, which they so far aren't, I don't see why they wasted the time and money half-assing it.

May I suggest reading the visual novel then? You seem to be complaining about the setting a lot. Alternative fleshes it out more.

Or better yet; may I suggest picking up a copy of Muv Luv Alternative Integral Works?

It goes FAR more into detail with regards to the workings of the universe than any other medium.

It's anime. It's FICTION. Ain't gotta explain nothing if it diverts from history as we know it. That's like complaining of all the alternate history TV shows and movies people throw out. That's sort of the point.

The thing about alternate history fiction is that it's often written in ignorance of the facts(and your government school education does not cover anything close to enough to write AH about anything) and the history tends to twist itself to fit the plot, rather than following naturally from the divergence, sometimes in the face of all logic(for example, there's one series out there that has the socialists become a major political influence because a disgraced Lincoln decided to join them after the Republican party was virtually destroyed along with their tariffbecause they failed to prevent the southern states from seceding like everybody thought they had the right to dowhich everybody in the Union hated).

That said, it doesn't sound near as bad as the Domination of the Draka timeline does, which starts with abolitionists being fooled by the word "serf" and goes downhill from there.

Invasion of man-eating silicon creatures can cause a lot of historical divergence.

Actially it wouldn't, as hypothetical silicon creatures, if they existed, would be so alien and therefore couldn't digest nor survive on Earth. Hell, real-life silicon life would probably be...crystals.

There's also the problem that if they respored oxygen, they woild probably exhale pure Silicon Dioxide.

Silicon Dioxide is solid quartz.

Also I think they would die if you dumped soda on them

Amazingly enough, MuvLuv explains this.

Except silicon life is not really possible in the way people think it is.

See here. If Muv-Luv actually adresses these issues, that's actually somewhat impressive.
