Think of it in OHS terms. It is a job, after all: risks that you're exposed to as part of your job are supposed to be mitigated in proportion to their likelyhood [infrequent, in this case] and potential consequences [pretty damn severe.] |

Sorry to butt in, but I have been linked to this thread by a friend and I couldn't help replying as I'm really speechless at the ignorance displayed by certain posters in here. This is especially true about the guy with the Dragonball avatar, whose misinformation is clearly being influenced by ridiculous sources like Shitkaku. For starters, le't clear up a seemingly widespread misconception: it's definitely not true that to enter these events one must "purchase hundrends of copies" or something. On the contrary, tickets to these events are included for free inside each single copy of a specific CD edition (usually the Theater Edition), which costs individually no more than a thousand yen or so to buy. Actually, looking up 握手券 on auction websites it becomes obvious that anyone can get these tickets even without purchasing the single itself. So, on the contrary, it's actually the extreme cheapness to acquire these passes that attracts tens of thousands of people at the events every time, and (sadly) exposes them to inflitrations by intruders from the outside as it is proven by this case.

Also, I can definitely say I've been following the event rather close these days, more so than it can apparently be said about mainstream media or "otaku-oriented" outlets, so I hope you don't mind if I post this summary about the incident. I compiled it so as to clear up any possible misunderstandings.

Briar, a lot of people here are very anti-otaku and anti-idol and even anti-Japanese so they will make sweeping generalizations about the industry to trash it without doing research on the subject. Some try to clear up the misconceptions but they tend to get ignored. Sometimes banned. It's weird.

That doesn't change the fact that handshaking events are mildly exploitative of both the girls and fans.
