What happened in this case was definitely not a part of any job

Think of it in OHS terms. It is a job, after all: risks that you're exposed to as part of your job are supposed to be mitigated in proportion to their likelyhood [infrequent, in this case] and potential consequences [pretty damn severe.]

Japan's music market is no more about how many fans ya average but how many average CDs per fan could be induced.
I did say "top sellers". The normal crowd started buying less, the otaku began buying more; net result is it's the latter who get pandered to the most.

He had no bag and hid the saw in his jacket, so short of a metal detector or patdown, I'm not too sure what they could've done beyond that bulletproof glass thing you link to. I have a feeling they don't do the first two for the same reason they'd never do the third: alienating the fans, especially the ones that spend boatloads of cash, is a Bad Thing.

On the other hand, "fan involvement" on new security measure might work for them if they spin it right.

That is pretty much true from what I observe on the Japanese music scene.

Sorry to butt in, but I have been linked to this thread by a friend and I couldn't help replying as I'm really speechless at the ignorance displayed by certain posters in here. This is especially true about the guy with the Dragonball avatar, whose misinformation is clearly being influenced by ridiculous sources like Shitkaku. For starters, le't clear up a seemingly widespread misconception: it's definitely not true that to enter these events one must "purchase hundrends of copies" or something. On the contrary, tickets to these events are included for free inside each single copy of a specific CD edition (usually the Theater Edition), which costs individually no more than a thousand yen or so to buy. Actually, looking up 握手券 on auction websites it becomes obvious that anyone can get these tickets even without purchasing the single itself. So, on the contrary, it's actually the extreme cheapness to acquire these passes that attracts tens of thousands of people at the events every time, and (sadly) exposes them to inflitrations by intruders from the outside as it is proven by this case.

Also, I can definitely say I've been following the event rather close these days, more so than it can apparently be said about mainstream media or "otaku-oriented" outlets, so I hope you don't mind if I post this summary about the incident. I compiled it so as to clear up any possible misunderstandings.

Q: Was the attacker even a fan, or an idol fan at all?

No, according to an interview with her mother she said she has never seen him bring in or keep any amount of idol goods at home. Further talks with acquaintances denied him ever being a fan or mentioning the group. No occurence of his name appear in the database history of applicants for theater shows and other subscription-based events. The man was revealed to have no interest in idols or musical acts at all.
Q: How did he get into the event, don’t you have to buy a specific CD version for it?

Later police investigations revealed that the only AKB-related items in his room were a mere two CD singles. Not surprisingly both of them were the edition containing a free ticket to the current Zenkoku Akushukai event, recently obtained with the clear intention (as the attacker himself confirmed) of using the passes to cause havoc at the gathering. An interview with the nearest music shop denied ever seeing him purchase them.
Q: Did he specifically want to assault AKB for any defined reason?

No, he himself admits he didn’t hold any specific interest for the group, any target was a good target for him. Indeed, he didn’t even know the names of the members he went on to attack.
Q: So why did he go to a handshake event of all places?

He was looking for a large crowd of people to assault and kill so as to broadcast his action, which is why he elected the closest large and accessible event planned at the moment. To better prepare the attack he even departed from home one day before with the excuse of going out for a walk and made his whereabouts unknown, ignoring all incoming calls from his family.
Q: What are his motivations behind the act?

By his own admission, it was a way for him to vent out the frustration caused by his long unemployment (started last December) and likely compounded by the worsening economic condition of his family, which he provided for with his part-time job. This violent act comes at the end of a long period of depression which also involved cases of classmate bullying (resulting in him quitting school) and self-wounding.

Briar, a lot of people here are very anti-otaku and anti-idol and even anti-Japanese so they will make sweeping generalizations about the industry to trash it without doing research on the subject. Some try to clear up the misconceptions but they tend to get ignored. Sometimes banned. It's weird.

That doesn't change the fact that handshaking events are mildly exploitative of both the girls and fans.
