Whoa, I certainly didn't expect to see any reviewing for this so early. They haven't even officially premiered it at that event in Hong Kong yet! Well, however this got pulled off, it's much appreciated.
The pricing is definitely steep and I was worried about getting the Blu-Ray only to be let down by an OVA that was more pretty than anything else, but this review helps put those worries at ease. I'll be sticking to my $35 pre-order. I might have been interested to see more details and comments about the strength of the plot itself, though on the other hand I'm happy to not be handed any early spoilers. Again, thanks a lot. |

Yes, but we're not comparing it to 24 or Lost, we're comparing it to other anime. And it's still far more expensive than the norm. |

Okay, I know I've asked this in other threads before, and I'm expecting the answers will be confusing and contradictory here as well, but let's give it another try:
This isn't one for newcomers, but what would be a good Gundam series for newcomers? It's been my everlasting shame that, as an anime, I've yet to watch a single Gundam series. If you can't pick just one, or there are different possibilities, I'm not a huge mecha fan, so don't give me one that has "awesome robot action," because said action tends to make me fall asleep. I'd also prefer one that's easier to find for rent etc., since my purchasing power is limited at the moment. |

You should start with Gundam 00 or the original Mobile Suit Gundam, which is in the same universe that Gundam Unicorn takes place in. For MSG, I would normally recommend the excellent movie trilogy that really helped its popularity take off. But for a limited time you can actually see the original series for free online, so consider doing that if you have the time to commit to it. Here's a really excellent web page where you can get all the information about the Gundam series that will be streaming. It also offers descriptions and organizes its information quite well, so you should find this very useful. http://www.b-ch.com/contents/gundam-unicorn/?xm=5&xr=13 |

Setup for Gundam Unicorn would be Mobile Suit Gundam (Available Free at Crunchyroll until April or rent the 3 mobile Suit Gundam movies if you don't want to watch the entire series), Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (Available Free right here at ANN until April) and Nu Gundam: Char's CounterAttack (you could probably Nexflix it), The 08th MS Team is a series that a lot of people that don't "get" Gundam enjoy and it would at least give you a cliffnotes version of the conflict of the original series, Gundam 0083 would give set up to the rise of the antagonists of Zeta Gundam, bur that series is definitely Mecha Porn. |

Isn't it an R0 release like almost every other blu ray (I've yet to see a blu ray not specified as all regions). Still no official word on EU distro yet

If I were trying to introduce a friend to Gundam, I'd probably show them Zeta, Wing, or 08th MS Team. Wing is the only Gundam that actually had a wide following here in the states, and chances are the person may have seen and enjoyed it without even realizing it. As for Zeta, it has a level of polish on it that the original can't touch, even though my favorite is original. Someone that might scoff at the old and dated animation of original might not have a problem with Zeta. 08th is recommendable since it is essentially its own thing, and sort of self explanatory. As for the price of Unicorn, I agree that the 50 dollar MSRP is stretching it. A two+ hour movie can be had on Blu-Ray for less than twenty dollars. Hell, Akira in all its remastered glory costs less than Amazon is currently asking for the first UC disc. I think it is inevitable that UC will flop in the states (was anyone predicting otherwise?) but at the same time, I'm not sure a price reduction could have saved it either. Obviously I'm not knocking the quality of something I haven't seen, but Gundam is such an also-ran franchise here in the US (Pokemon, Yugioh, DBZ, among others being the main draws) that the name alone hardly drives sales. I guess we have to be thankful that Unicorn is even coming out here at all for any price. Now the question remains...when can we get a Gundam 0079 boxset with the Japanese audio track, and a stateside release of F91 and CCA on Blu-Ray? Never you say? Nuts. |

Well Amazon's page for it says "Region 1 (U.S. and Canada only. Read more about DVD formats.)" which is inaccurate for Blu-Ray and confusing. |

The JP site doesn't give a region and I've seen it listed as being all region elsewhere. I wish amazon would actually specify properly like it does for DVDs.

At first I read that as "short but unimpressive" and then thought to the trailer and was like "wait....you've got to be kidding me, what more could it possibly need", but of course I just needed to wake up a little and see what was actually being written.
I'm actually kind of surprised to see a review up for this so soon and pleasantly so as well since it wasn't just assigned to Carl Kimlinger yet again for him to give the ol' harsh review too. I notice it seems like almost all the mecha shows get assigned to him and all of the slice of life and moe shows seems to go to Theron who is way more open minded and forgiving. Thanks for something new ANN. |

Well, I didn't get into any spoilers because, frankly, there wasn't enough there to spoil. Or rather, if I had said anything more specific, it would have probably spoiled everything. It's not like it's a two hour movie.

HAHA! If people are complaining about the pricing on Unicorn than they DEFINITELY wouldn't buy F91 or CCA on Blu-ray. "Two hours for $80!? That's not the standard! Why the hell should I pay that when I can go buy two complete FUNi (lol) BD shows for less than that!" Someone above said it best; Americans are stuck in that Walmart pricing mentality. They are so obsessed with quantity (there's not enough minutes!!) and getting the most for their dollar they forget about the quality that goes into products like GU. Sucks for people like myself who are more than willing to spend the money on the highest quality versions of the shows they love. If a cheapy priced BD like GU won't sell, than kiss any chance at any other Gundam series making the leap to BD stateside. I'd KILL for a subtitle track on those Zeta BD boxes. That's the only thing that's stopping me from importing them. |

Wait that was you? If so can I ask if the B score on story was more a consideration of it's unapproachability to new fans and the expectation of knowing certain events and terms prior to viewing it or was it something else entirely? |

Also, you didn't really go into Video quality very much. Is the High-Def Blu-ray quality worth it?
