so did this have an ending? or was it discontinued. cause after reading the first volume, i don't know how they could possibly wrap the rest up in a single volume.

Yes it has an ending. It doesn't follow the anime. Most anime to manga adaption are like that.

I like to think of it as the "this happened in the middle" story of Samurai Champloo.

Anyway, not as if the ending was all that conclusive, anyway.
No spoilers, but it was very open-ended, if you understand my meaning.

Well I look at it as some more stories to look foward to after you already seen all 26 anime episode. A supplement rather than a substitute for the anime. Since the manga isn't going to be the next Blade of the Immortal or anything, it's definitely something for the fans.

Yes 2 volumes, manga adapted from anime arn't usually that long, probably Evangelion being the longest I know of.
Wolf's Rain is at 2 volume, Rahxephon is at 3 volumes, etc.

Oh so kinda like the Cowboy Bebop and Cowboy bebop Shooting Star manga then. I guess I'll pick these up. havn't seen all of the Anime yet. I think volume 7 comes out in January. I can't believe the DVDs were released in a year. I remember waiting for January in the middle September waiting for the first DVD.
